It's a dull & stereotype movie framed within a standard Bala template.
Every turn in the movie is predictable, and pretty boring.
Dialogue doesn't infuse any life into the movie. Sprinkling of bad words doesn't always bring authenticity to the movie - most of the times it will drive away family audience.
Screenplay is very weak. There are many unexplained holes (like the one on how the protagonist know the place where Sooravali is kept). Story looks like an unfinished job.
Only consolation in this movie is acting by Varalakshmi, and music by Ilayaraja.

Tharai Thappatai is gross and shocking by any standard. People started walking out of the movie as though they had come in, expecting it to be a comedy movie. But the fact remains, you just can not keep Bala out of the league!!! I have seen folk dance/ karakattam and had always wondered on why it is so indecent/gross. The film not only manages to depict the life of the dancers as authentic as possible, it also gives as an idea on how these indecent content have come into the context of our Culture. Westernization is the main culprit, because when we manage to appreciate an 'Quentin Tarantino', we tend to ignore Bala. With Ilayaraja's beautiful and rousing music, movie is worth a watch #OnlyForBraveHearts#

Tharai Thappattai (A) TAMIL ------- my Rating: ★★★ TYPICAL BALA FILM
STRENGTHS:- * Casting and performances: varalaxmi has done a great job. * Music and background score by maestro * Concept and screenplay: was very gripping....
WEAKNESSES:- * Scary ending as always.... * Second half drags....
FINAL VERDICT:- * Overall... it is bala movie we can watch only once because of his scary ending and heart warming scenes. Songs gives nice touch to the film as the movie is about dance. Watch it for once
