When Father Brown and his friends are invited to view a jewel-encrusted cross, a gift from the Pope to the newly-crowned queen Elizabeth, on display at Gloucester, the priest is convinced that Flambeau will try and steal it - and he is right. Flambeau's estranged daughter Marianne has been kidnapped by crooked Nero Hound and threatens to kill her unless Flambeau brings him the jewel. However, the cross disappears with security head Cardinal Papillon suspected of his theft. Aware of the true fate of the cross Father Brown must retrieve it as well as helping Flambeau to free Marianne
