Yuri Gurka claims Vladimir Putin grew up with a photo of "Berzhin" by his bed, saying, "Berzhin, who squats in 1920 dirt, gives birth of GRU, later KGB. Godfather." However, Leon Trotsky founded the GRU in 1918, and the GRU was not the predecessor of the KGB. They existed simultaneously with different areas of focus (similar to the CIA and FBI). The name "Berzhin" seems to be a combination of Yan Bergin, who was promoted to head of the GRU in 1920, and Felix Dzerzhinsky, founder of the Cheka, one of the preceding agencies of the KGB, and who is considered the "Godfather" of the KGB.
