The gremlins resemble the title monsters of Gremlins (1984) and Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990), but their behavior on the plane also calls to mind the, as it were, original "gremlins". Gremlins were once known to the Royal Air Force as mischievous imps who sabotage planes. Whenever something went wrong and no one knew why, a gremlin was blamed. During his time in the Royal Air Force, author Roald Dahl heard this myth and wrote a story about them, making gremlins famous (or, perhaps, infamous) throughout the world.

The cruise ship in the film, the "Legacy", bears a very strong resemblance to the R.M.S. Titanic and her sister ships R.M.S. Olympic and R.M.S. Britannic -- the Legacy has five smoke stacks instead of four like the ships R.M.S. Lusitania and R.M.S. Mauretania, and is rather cartoonishly shorter and fatter than the real-life ocean liners. Fortunately, however, the film takes place in the tropics, so icebergs are not a hazard.

The trivia items below may give away important plot points.

Among the clippings on Van Helsing's map of Atlantis is the picture of a sound-wave. This appears to be The Bloop, a mysterious low frequency sound detected in the South Pacific in 1997 by NOAA. Now confirmed the sound of a moving iceberg, it was then proposed to have been produced by a giant, undiscovered sea monster. Fittingly, the movie features a giant singing sea monster in its climax.
