Sex & Nudity

  • A kid asks another about why mermaids are sexy. The other kid responds that it's because of the mermaid's boobs.
  • A kid asks another whether he'd rather have a hat made of spiders or penises for fingers. It is played as a joke and is said twice.
  • Two young characters hug each other in celebration. (Much less than the book, where the two characters make out for an extended period of time and it is brought up continuously in the book.)

Violence & Gore

  • A woman slaps her son.
  • A woman is pushed and her coffee is spilled on her.
  • A boy talks about his mother dying in a car crash.
  • A kid is seen briefly being held in a choke-hold by police as they drive past. Later, the kid re-appears with blood on him saying he was kicked by the police but was able to escape.
  • Kids talk about how they think an old man killed a woman, hung her up and bled her in his back yard.
  • A boy threatens a man with a gun.

Profanity

  • Moderate profanity throughout the film, much less than the book: 5 derivatives of "fuck" (from 58 in the book), 2 derivitives of "shit" and 1 use of "piss" (from 120), 4 uses of the Vietnamese derogatory term "cong" and 1 use of both "yellow-skinned" and the slur for Communists of "red" (from 52), 3 uses of "penis" and 1 use of "boobies" (from 61), 3 derivatives of "jesus" (from 32), 1 use of "bugger" and 3 uses of "bastard" (from 31). As can be seen, much less than the book.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Two kids drink an Irish whiskey from a glass bottle stolen from one of the kid's alcoholic father.
  • An adult woman and man drink together in a car.
  • One kid offers another a cigarette which the other refuses. The first kid then smokes the cigarette briefly.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The film consists of repetitive and continuous use of the theme of racism. Both a Vietnamese and Aboriginal kid are attacked for their ethnicity.
  • There are some references to the Vietnam War as the movie is set in 1969, which may be unsettling to those who have experience from the war or have been affected by it.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • It is revealed that a mother is having an affair when she is caught by her son while she is kissing a police officer. Compared to the book it is much less explicit as in the book, where the mother and officer are described as engaging in complete sexual intercourse in graphic detail.
  • In a note, a girl says how her father "wasn't gentle, wasn't kind", that "he betrayed (her) again and again" and now the "betrayal lives and grows inside" her. It implied that her father had impregnated her, and abused her several times before. Compared to the book, it is very subtle, as the book explicitly states that it was rape in gruesome and disgusting detail.

Violence & Gore

  • A girl is found hanging from a rope from a tree. Her body is then sunk to the bottom of a lake.
  • The movie is based on the disappearance and suicide of a young girl and finding out who killed her.
  • Two men go to the house of a Vietnamese family and they pull up weeds, verbally assault the residents, and punch the father of the family. A man tries to intervene but gets in a hassle. The attacking man leaves in his car and almost hits a young boy.
  • A girl recalls the last night she saw her sister. Her sister was being beaten in her room by her father as she screamed, and that she went silent (see Sex & Nudity) before sneaking out later. The sister climbs a tree and sits for a while before hanging herself from the tree in front of the girl.
  • A house is set on fire and we see a man walking out with two others holding him up while he is covered in ash.

Profanity

  • 4 uses of "fuck" are racially charged, aimed toward Vietnamese family members, 3 of them spouted in a minute long fight scene.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Two kids watch as one of the kid's mother comes home in a car obviously drunk.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The movie opens with two kids finding a girl hanging from a tree and figuring out what to do with the body. This can be disturbing to those suffering from mental illness or suicide.
  • The scene when Laura's fate is uncovered can be Intense as it explores rape, abuse, incest, teenage pregnancy and suicide.
