Storyline

Four part BBC drama based on Mrs Gaskell's novel of 1855. Margaret Hale's father, a clergyman, resigns his position and moves his family from the rural south of England to the industrial North. The story deals with issues of class and gender against a backdrop of life in the cotton mills. Margaret's liberal views and sympathy for the mill workers set her at odds with mill owner John Thornton.
