Parish council chairman Robert Struthers is murdered before he can deliver the casting vote on whether Ancombe mineral water company should buy a well in the village owned by Robina Toynbee. Agatha falls for Anscombe's charming CEO Guy Freemont whilst handling his publicity drive and leaves the detection work to James and his wife Mary, who suspect other council members and Robert's old love rival Ron Allen, when Robina is also killed. It is also James who saves Agatha from the real murderer and then makes a confession of his own to her.
