Season 2 is a major disappointment.
5 November 2019 | by kentriskSee all my reviews

Season 1 was excellent. I enjoy Jack Ryan as a character and the world Tom Clancy created but am not a super fan. I understand the necessity for creators to update and shape material as they get into different media and times. Season 1 did that effectively.

Season 2 smells like the classic Hollywood mistake of disrespecting the source material.

It's weird because Season 1 was the opposite, they kept the important beats but made the material (which is original to TV in both cases) fresh. They pulled off the difficult job of inhabiting a fictional world which already exists without getting tired up in the difficulties of adapting decades old specifics.

Key writers have to have left between seasons because errors are made that weren't made before. First of all, Abbie Cornish, who plays Jack's love interest, Cathy Mueller, a doctor and important balance in his life, has disappeared without any explanation. Major characters in the overall JR world are killed off unnecessarily in what seems like a writers room laboring under a "we've got to raise the stakes here" direction.

Secondly Jack has always been portrayed as someone who pushes the boundaries. However in the new series he jumps around the world killing people and hitting armies of mercenaries without the support or acknowledgement of his higher-ups and nobody stops him. He basically sets off on the old "you killed my friend so I'm going to get you" trope and doesn't suffer any consequences.

Time and again characters behave in inexplicably extreme ways even when it's not necessary for the story.

I really liked John Krascinski in this role and he showed me a lot both in Season 1 and in the movie 13 Hours in terms of him being a credible thinking man's action hero. Season 2 reeks of excessive star service in the plotting and dialog writing. I suppose it's unfair but it's more disappointing when something which was really good is mediocre rather than having been mediocre from the beginning.
