Small town Christmas love
TheLittleSongbird29 June 2021
Whether it is easy to not take 'Tis the Season for Love' and similar films seriously is dependent on whether the good things outweigh the bad and vice versa. Dependent on how many flaws there are and how big they are. And dependent on how well the film executed its good things. In some cases it is easy to not take it too seriously. In other cases it is very distracting when there are so many annoyances and done to an incompetent level.

'Tis the Season for Love' is not one of those films. It does have things wrong with it, then again when has a Hallmark festive film been perfect, and the flaws are a few of the usual ones. 'Tis the Season for Love' does achieve its aims though at being undemanding light-hearted entertainment that has charm and heart and has a lot of good things, ones that are essential to get right if a film is to be halfway watchable. My festive Hallmark film viewings have been hit and miss, 'Tis the Season for Love' is one of the hits thankfully.

Sarah Lancaster is very understated but also very appealing, personally didn't think she looked bored and appreciated that character flaws are not overdone (have found this too many times with Hallmark). Brendan Penny is a very likeable, relaxed and charming leading man, did not care at all this time about his character being cliched because there is never the mistake of taking any uptightness and such to extremes. Really liked the chemistry between the two, lead chemistry has always varied with Hallmark (and Lifetime) and this is one of the cases where it has worked. Very genuine and always comfortable.

Also liked the supporting cast, especially sympathetic Gwyneth Walsh. All the cast in fact do well in fleshing out characters that are Hallmark cliches used a lot but actually make them feel real. The direction is always competent and in control of the material while not phoning in. The production values are great, with it being particularly beautifully shot. The scenery is very easy on the eyes. The script doesn't come over as corny or schmaltzy, and flows naturally. Although the story is far from perfect, it is light-hearted, succeeds in not taking itself too seriously and is charming.

It is very predictable though, not that that wasn't unexpected, with little new done with a more of the same formula. It ends too neatly and conveniently too, which is also not uncommon for Hallmark.

Personally too thought that the music score was ill-fitting, with the twinkling sound and quality being too tacky and made it sound like it was lifted out of a late-80s/early-90s family fantasy.

Overall, well above average and quite good even. 7/10.

Enjoyed it.
MIssM1912 January 2017
I actually had very low expectations about this movie. The title didn't make me excited, a neither did the plot or the few images I saw. I thought the same thing the first 15 minutes of the movie, but as it continued I found myself enjoying it. Both leads do a pretty good work, and so does the supporting cast. It's not the best Hallmark has made, and the end is very predictable, but it's a lovely movie to enjoy in a boring afternoon.

Fact: The actors who play Barry and Dean perform as brothers in Hallmark's "Chesapeake Shores", and I think this was shot before or during the production of the show so it was nice seeing them, even though they are not goofing around.

Christmas Wishes!
adamjohns-4257511 December 2020
Christmas Confessions/'Tis The Season For Love (2015) -

I adore Brendan Penny and he should be in everything and get naked a lot! He's so fricking charming and adorable in all that he does, but especially as Dean in this film. He could easily get ME to settle down with him, but I'm not sure that the relationship that bloomed in this one, with Sarah Lancaster as Beth would really last. She would always be looking to make up for what she'd lost and even Brendan, with his gorgeous eyes, wouldn't be enough for her. Throughout this one she was a bit sulky, although I'm probably just jealous that she got to snog him, as evidenced by the fact I was shouting B!tch at the TV every time she did.

I liked Gwynyth Walsh as the Mum, even though she was a bit overexcited most of the time and her hyper behaviour did seem a bit hard to buy, but she was just jolly and so far from the Klingon she played in 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' (1987-94).

I also liked not knowing if the Father Christmas Beth talked to was the real one or not. It's those little touches of magic that add to these films, without making them silly. And Garry Chalk did very well in the role.

Overall the fact that Brendan Penny was in it, should be enough of a reason to watch it, but he was also playing a fireman. Sadly he doesn't get naked for a calendar, although he did in the version in my head.

It was sweet and cheery and full of Christmas. I'm always happy to come back to this one.

7.25/10.

Sarah Lancaster fans should like it but it's not the greatest
utgard1411 November 2015
The lovely Sarah Lancaster stars in this predictable but enjoyable Hallmark Christmas movie. Sarah plays a struggling actress who returns home for the holidays to the small town she left years before. She returns having never realized her dreams of stardom and discovers her ex now has a happy small town life, married with adorable kids. This makes her wonder if she made the right choice leaving all those years ago. Then there's some weird stuff with Santa Claus and you'll just have to see the rest for yourself.

I really like Sarah and will pretty much watch anything she's in. I can't say I loved this movie but I also can't say much against it, since my expectations are generally low on TV movies. Every now and then you watch a Hallmark movie and feel like someone just mashed together a few previous Hallmark movies and came up with something that seems to be new but doesn't really feel like it. That's what we have here. But even the weakest of scripts for these things can often be saved by the charisma of the leads and how well the romance works. The problem there is, while Sarah is certainly beautiful, she just seems kind of bored in this. There also isn't much of a spark between her and love interest Brendan Penny. It's not a bad seasonal romcom by any stretch, just not particularly great. If you're a fan of Sarah Lancaster, you'll probably like this fine. Otherwise you might find yourself trying to put together the puzzle of which Hallmark movies you previously saw the different pieces of this one.

Mixed a little differently
Jackbv12331 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This movie had many of the usual formulaic ingredients of a Hallmark Christmas movie, but I think they were combined in a slightly different way than usual.

We had the down on her luck, even failing (insert occupation here) actress, Beth, that returns home. She asks Santa for a wish. But this Santa has no magic to grant her, only good advice. Beth meets her old high school flame, but guess what - he's married and happily. She rekindles what could have been an old flame. And the stage is set. ***SPOILERS starting to pile up from here *** You know the phone call is coming and it does. And while she goes back to New York, she doesn't wait until the last minute to return. But here's a little twist - the show is canceled because of a sprinkler disaster. But Beth saves it.

The story was smoothly put together. The acting was decent although Sarah Lancaster played her role so quietly it was easy to miss the spark. In fact, the first half, or so, of the movie was a little bit sad as Beth looked back on her (lack of) career. The sadness was necessary, but I enjoy leading ladies with a bit more quirkiness and optimism.

I'm glad I watched this one.

Average fare but...
rossmcfarlen18 November 2020
...lifted to another level by the presence of the lovely and engaging Sarah Lancaster.

I've seen SL in quite a few TV movies and she has the knack of making average fare thoroughly engaging with her relaxed acting style - she seems to fit into roles with great ease and never ever seems to be acting, which is an extraordinary gift. Never underestimate charm in actors - some have it, and many don't. Ms Lancaster has it in spades, and it's underpinned by a quality of humility which again some actors don't seem to have.

...and children seem to really enjoy her company which explains the sheer ease (for the viewer) with which she works/acts with them in this flick.

The story is average but the setting is very nice - there's a scene on the ice rink which is thoroughly delightful visually...I'll say no more.

I could watch this again without any complaints.

Ugh. Another woman expected to give in to a man.
heatherdavidson-451952 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler...

Why do Hallmark movies in general feature a woman who either gives up her dreams or changes who she is to please a man?

In this case she drops her life long dream because the 2nd man in her life isn't willing to make sacrifices or move to support her dream, so she has to drop what she's always wanted to stay in a podunk town so a firefighter, who could easily get a job in NY, doesn't have to give up a single thing.

Are these movies written by people who are jealous of those who made it out of their redneck small town? They make it seem like anyone who leaves is missing something and can't have love and happiness outside those small nosy, dead-end streets. I grew up in a tiny town and there is nothing, not a single thing, as idyllic as they try to make it appear. Especially not worth giving up your dreams for. What a condensing, annoying movie.

Follow your dreams until you fail
jonathanrspalding2 November 2017
This movie stands out in the Hallmark Christmas buffet as one of the best. Of course you have the usual Hallmark fare with a dose of Christmas magic. However, this movie is more subtle, intelligent, and thoughtful than most. They addition of the former boyfriend and his wife as significant characters in the movie added a dimension and a little bit of comedy to the picture.

The heroine had to make a life choice to continue to follow a dream that did not seem to be working out, (but maybe could if she continues to work on it) or to follow a new path for another dream. That is frankly a much more realistic choice pattern than the usual you can have it all theme for most movies or the Disney movie premise you must follow your dreams and if you do your dream will come true. The question in this matter is what happens when the dream does not appear to work out? This movie could be funny at times and in the right places that gives it a less melodramatic tone than a lot of these movies tend to have, especially in hour 2.

I have enjoyed Tis the season as much or more the third or fourth time around than when I first saw it. Which when you have a two month movie marathon is a good trait to have for Hallmark.

Also of note my nine scored is based on the genre and style of movie. A perfect Hallmark Christmas movie would be a 10. If you do not like the genre you are not going to see this movie the same way as I. So to be clear this is not the second coming of Cassanblanca or Gone with the Wind (which I think is overrated). But its fun around Christmas.

Pretty Typical
cammietime28 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Leading lady lives in New York City - check. Leading Lady is from a small town - check. Leading lady visits small town in movie - check. Leading Lady falls in love with some guy in the home town - check. Leading lady has a big fancy job in New York City that causes conflict - check. Santa appears with magical items - check. Leading lady gives up her lifelong dream - check. Mother of leading lady is really good at baking and encouragement - check.

You get the idea this movie follows the same plot formula as all other Hallmark Christmas movies. The only things this movie does not have is that the leading lady is NOT a Marketing Director, this time around she is an actress. Also, the confident wise old grandpa character that spews philosophical sayings is missing from this movie, and this of all movies could have really used him.

After watching this movie, I do have to ask - why are small towns better than NYC? Why are part time teaching jobs better than a Broadway acting career? Why does the leading lady always have to give up her career ambitions and dreams every time in these Hallmark movies?

Beth seems a bit bored in this movie, or, really more so confused as to why she is even there. It seems to make no sense to her. Dean, the love interest is pretty wooden and does not really do much more than spout sweet nothings at Beth, or lecture her about what it means to be great.

Both Beth and Dean are a bit odd, and maybe that is why they sort of have chemistry in this movie. The mother character is a bit overbearing in this one, and less endearing than other movies like this I've seen. The Dad is gone and like I already said, there is no grandpa, and both of those characters would make sense in this movie given how much everyone likes to give Beth advice about life and what is truly important.

All in all, not a bad movie to have in the background while you make cookies or something, but certainly not something to spend a night focused on.

Hated the selfish guy
teebear81725 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I can tolerate Sarah Lancasters teeth for 90 mimutes, but this lead actor is a creep!!! Unlikeable, and his treatment of her when she has a rare oportunity for starting in a Broadway play. His reaction of selfishness wanting her to direct a school play instead of her lifetime dream of Broadway, was despicable, discusting, vile and hateable. he crapped on her dream. I am a conservative guy and im tired of these women acquiescing to mens selfishness. This was NOT a feel good ending. It was UNACCEPTABLE!

An honest and believable love story about finding out what we really want from our future.
MarcFilmer2 November 2015
'Tis The Season For Love' is a movie with a good heart. The main theme that seemed apparent was 'choice'; the far reaching ripple effect on our lives, from simple decisions made early on. Nina Weinmans story evolves with a perfectly timed pace and the main character, Beth ( Sarah Lancaster) is portrayed with honest sincerity, while her journey to become her authentic self unfolds. Terry Ingrams vision is very well executed, with beautiful cinematography – wonderful colors and rich set detailing make for an enjoyable visual experience. The attention to detail set this movie apart, placing it in the top tier of the TV Holiday Movie genre (which I must admit, I love). Brendan Penny (Dean) creates a believable love interest and I enjoyed watching their relationship develop on screen. This movie is about love, family and the importance of community and how the surface appearance of success can actually be a mask covering doubts and insecurities. The musical score by Hal Beckett is heartfelt and playful; twinkly and sparkly in all the right festive places. He perfectly accents the intimate romantic moments with his delightful piano and string moments and the fun woodwind motifs really make those light comedic scenes work. Heartwarming stuff indeed.

Nothing new and I don't like that the she tells the kids they were perfect when they sang off key
SunnyDaise31 December 2022
This movie really is nothing new - it is realistic enough, but too dull, seen it all in these movies before. The worst part was when the lead told the children they 'did not miss a note' when they were off with the piano. I wouldn't intentionally watch it again, because I prefer more contrast / variety in these stories and there's nothing unique here to merit a re-watch. However, there are still a lot of good points regarding decision making and it might just give a bit of clarity when there's big decisions to be made. I also like that the lead was realistic about where she could afford to live - often homes in movies are too expensive for the characters' situations. I just wish they'd shown her two ideas of life in parallel and joined them together again at the end for a more original format for this genre - a bit like Sliding Doors but all-age friendly.

stereotypes
olgatay17 November 2019
Pure crap and that's all. A woman abandons all her dreams, her career and herself for a man who does not support her, and wants her to remain selfishly with him. And the movie pretends that this is the message of Christmas.

The Christmas...Christmas...Christmas word is overly stated... but I'm just not getting that Christmasy feeling regardless of how many times they repeat the word "Christmas"
Ed-Shullivan15 November 2016
Sarah Lancaster stars as an actress trying to make it in New York on the stage but after 10 years of not succeeding she decides to take a break from her struggling actress profession to spend Christmas in her hometown during the Christmas season. When she arrives home she just seems to continually be disappointed by bad news until.....yes you guessed it, the magic of the Christmas season!

The actual word "Christmas" was stated at least a hundred or more times during this so-called Romance/Christmas themed film but even for a made for TV movie with all the cheerful music and all the Christmas decorations and Christmas themed fireplaces trying to warm the inside of our heart, simply put, this film only gave me heartburn. This to me was a total waste of my time and I am a big sucker for Christmas themed films. I suggest you avoid it especially if you are trying to find a movie to get you in to either a romantic mood and/or the Christmas spirit. Too mushy would be providing too nice a compliment about this stinker.

MEANINGFUL STORY!!!
ssimeonidou120 December 2020
I liked this movie very very much! I liked the plot, the setting and the kids.... where charming and pretty natural. The film had a good story to tell regarding dreams in general, in my opinion. It's very important to chase our dreams as much as understanding ourselves, our depest whishes and the fact that those dreams can change as we grow older and wiser through experience. I found the cast was very good also. Everybody in this film was great and represented their roles with emotions. Sarah Lancaster was very good but Brednan Penny was amazing as always! I like the way he approaches the parts he gets with innerness and charm. It's one of the movies i wish had a sequel....

The same old story...
sjvalarik2 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
No surprises, no twists, no real conflicts, strange conversations... 100 % predictable. Of course every Christmas movie have the same cliché but I was expecting... something.

Also the story messed up my brain a little. Beth has the little house medal in New York and called her mom to say thank you for it... then LATER there is a scene, when her mom actually gives her the medal. What was that?

This is a great romance. The actors are perfect and the story is super sweet. I love hallmark movies and this is probably one of my favorites. I would watch this even if it wasn't Christmas. Sarah Lancaster and Brendan Penny have great chemistry that makes this Christmas movie even better.

Nice story ruined by terrible acting
kkier6 November 2018
Sara Lancaster is a beautiful young woman who gave a flat, uninspiring performance in this movie. Every line sounded like she was reading from a shopping list using a flat, nasal monotone. Her mumbling made it hard at times to understand her. It got so bad I had to turn on the close captioning. Her supporting cast did the best they could. Terry Ingram is a good director but he didn't get a good performance out of Lancaster. Who cast her in this role? The movie could've been so much better with a decent actress. How ironic...she played an actress who couldn't make it on Broadway - it's no wonder.

Bailed Quick
chiltonsjillfreeport3 January 2020
This cheesy movie lost me at the 9 minute mark, when hyper-perky fifty-something Mom brings 35-ish daughter to share wishes with Santa. Puh-leeze.

Lead Sarah Lancaster seems tranquilized, I can't buy Brandon Penny as a straight male lead (even on Hallmark) and no, it's not a Christmas Miracle, Mom; they're called plane tickets.

'Tis bad stuff.

Two good actors poor script. This movie just didn't make any sense down to the Christmas wishes, just depressing. It earned a 4 because it kept me believing it would get better. It absolutely did not.

Sarah Lancaster was depressing and boring.
smithduke9 April 2018
Sarah Lancaster was very flat and lacked passion in this movie. I don't recall seeing her before so I'm not certain if this is her acting style or if the director's aim for her character was to be dull and depressed. Brendan Penny is always worth watching but even he couldn't save this movie. I had a hard time getting to the end.

Clear why she didn't make it on Broadway
lynfisher-0219524 January 2022
It is clear why she didn't make it on Broadway or even off-Broadway. She is a terrible actress even by Hallmark standards.

Very blah delivery - no energy . She doesn't even appear to be interested. Calling it in.
