Storyline

For desperate petty crooks Hazel and her boyfriend Ade, kidnapping is their last chance to finally get a normal life. Their well-chosen target: a filthy rich diamond distributor's young and innocent daughter. For this reason, after six weeks of careful and meticulous planning, nothing seems to cloud the success of this obviously fast and easy job, after all, a hefty ransom of 300 carats of diamonds is a risk worth taking. Nevertheless, as right from the start, the ominous feeling that something is quite off is threatening to send Hazel's fail-proof plan down the drain, the unaware and helpless gang is bound to discover that the ancient evil of this world always lurks in the darkest of places. Trivia

The scenes of the interior of the jewellery dealer's house were filmed at the Lindfield Victorian House Museum in Auckland Park, Johannesburg. See more »

Goofs

In the video recorded flashback, the priests speak of the Codex Vaticanus and mention that the House on Willow Street is a site of evil due to it being the furthest point away from the Vatican where the Codex is kept (illustrating the fact with an apple). This however is geographically incorrect - the geographic antipode from the Vatican is located deep in the South Pacific Ocean, East of both New Zealand and the International Date Line and far away from any landmass that the movie might be set in. No One is Afraid of the Dark
27 March 2017 | by Claudio CarvalhoSee all my reviews

For six weeks, Hazel (Sharni Vinson), Ade (Steven John Ward), James (Gustav Gerdener) and Mark (Zino Ventura) plots a plan to abduct the daughter of a jewelry dealer Katherine (Carlyn Burchell). When they break in the house of the family on Willow Street, Ade sees cabalistic symbols in her wardrobe and then he brings the young woman to an abandoned facility in a van. They chain Katherine in the basement and video-tape her. They send the video to her family and calls her father to ask for the ransom. They are not able to contact him by phone and Ade and James drive the van back to the house to talk to him. However they find Katherine's parents dead on their bed and two priests died on the basement. Ade finds a couple of videotapes and bring them to their hideout. When they watch the video, they see that they have unleashed a demon and they are doomed to die.

"From a House on Willow Street" is a creepy and scary horror film. The story and the screenplay are very well written increasing the tension along the new discoveries of the criminals. The lead character Hazel is very well developed and the gruesome locations and the dark cinematography supports the plot. The optimist conclusion is a little deceptive since there is no explanation why the demon became weaker but fans of genuine horror film will enjoy "From a House on Willow Street". My vote is seven.
