Jack Campbell's character is named Colonel Emmerich. It's a hint for filmmaker Roland Emmerich, known by his apocalyptic movies.

Holding the news conference, a scientist says, "There are reports of portals a few tens of thousands of miles from Earth."

What? The Earth travels along its orbit at many tens of thousands of miles per hour. Are these portals moving in synchronized motion with Earth in its orbit around the sun?

If these portals were very small by mass, they could conceivably be at the Sun-Earth LaGrange points L1 or L2. But those locations are about a million miles from Earth, (one toward, and one opposite the Sun).
