FilmStruck Gains Support of Christopher Nolan, Guillermo del Toro, Damien Chazelle and More as Shutdown Looms

Joseph Baxter Nov 15, 2018

As streaming service FilmStruck eyes an imminent shutdown, a letter of support signed by major industry names attempts a save.

FilmStruck has quietly become the default place for serious movie buffs to stream an impressive lineup of indie, classic and foreign offerings, notably serving as the streaming home of enthusiastically curated releases of The Criterion Collection. Yet, it may have done so too quietly, since the company’s splash page is now dominated by a message announcing the service’s shutdown, set for November 29. However, some of the service’s high-profile industry subscribers are now attempting to keep it alive.

Entertainment industry heavies, notably Christopher Nolan, Guillermo del Toro, Damien Chazelle, along with Barry Jenkins Christopher McQuarrie and Paul Thomas Anderson, just to name a few, have affixed their names to a petition letter that is urging the folks at FilmStruck to keep things up and running.

Jacob Tremblay Joins The Shining Sequel Doctor Sleep

Jacob Tremblay Joins The Shining Sequel Doctor Sleep
Doctor Sleep, the upcoming sequel to The Shining, has just added another big name to its growing cast. Jacob Tremblay, star of Room and this year's The Predator, has been tapped to star in director Mike Flanagan's latest Stephen King adaptation. Details haven't yet been made available in regards to who the young, rising star is going to play, but he did score a big payday for the role and there is one, fairly obvious guess as to who Tremblay could be playing.

According to a new report, Jacob Tremblay scored a $100,000 payday for his role in Doctor Sleep. What's particularly remarkable is not only the actor's age, who has been on the rise in Hollywood and is still just 12-years-old, but it's also being reported that he will only be working for a few days on the production. That means he's likely only going to be in a few scenes,

Tom Cruise Will Fly Aircraft in Top Gun 2, But Not a Fighter Jet

Paramount has confirmed that Tom Cruise will fly in "certain aircrafts," not fighter jets in Top Gun 2. Additionally, the studio also revealed that filming has not been halted in order for the actor to learn how to fly a fighter jet. Cruise is known for doing his own stunts, which has included flying a helicopter in Mission: Impossible - Fallout, but he is stepping up his game for the Top Gun sequel. Let's just hope he doesn't break any bones this time.

Last week, it was reported that Tom Cruise had shut down the production of Top Gun 2 in order to learn how to fly fighter jets. However, the sequel will continue to film through the spring of 2019, according to sources at Paramount. As for the flying of fighter jets, that isn't true. But, Cruise will be flying some other types of aircraft that have yet to be revealed at this time.

Tom Cruise Reportedly Halts Production on Top Gun: Maverick So He Can Learn How To Fly a Fighter Jet

In typical Tom Cruise fashion, he has reportedly halted production of Top Gun: Maverick so that he could learn how to fly a fighter jet so he doesn’t have to fake it like he did in the first film.

Like he does in all of his films, he wants to perform the jet stunts himself so that he will make the stunts look as real as possible. This isn’t really surprising, after all he did learn to fly a helicopter for Mission: Impossible - Fallout. A fighter jet is a whole other beast, though!

I think Tom Cruise actually thinks that he’s death proof! Is he!? Maybe! Seriously though, how long is it going to take him to learn how to fly a fighter jet?

Top Gun: Maverick is currently shooting in San Diego with Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) at the helm.

The sequel centers around Maverick

Simon Pegg and Kate Mara Team for High-Stakes Thriller The Inheritance

Simon Pegg and Kate Mara Team for High-Stakes Thriller The Inheritance
Simon Pegg has been coasting on his geek charm for close to two decades now, and when he's not taking on a role that will play near and dear to his fans' hearts, he's taking on an interesting character in something quite unexpected. As is the case with The Inheritance, which sounds like it will leave audiences on the edge of their seat. He's joined by Kate Mara in this thriller that is gearing up to shoot sometime next year.

Highland Film Group announced today that Kate Mara and Simon Pegg are in negotiations to star in the high-stakes thriller Inheritance, with British helmer Vaughn Stein directing, fresh off his recent work with Pegg and Margot Robbie in his noir thriller Terminal.

Matthew Kennedy penned script, and Richard B. Lewis is producing through his Southpaw Entertainment banner alongside David Wulf (upcoming The Night Clerk) of WulfPak Productions, and Convergent Media

Why the Six-Minute Alleyway Fight from ‘They Live’ Is Still One of Film’s Best Brawls

In terms of pure quality and general badassery, 2018 has been a banner year for fights on the screen both big and small. Think Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, and Liang Yang shotgun-arming each other around a Parisian nightclub bathroom in Mission: Impossible - Fallout. Think Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) dodging violently tossed office supplies across from his nemesis Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) in Marvel's Daredevil. Or simply think of Nicolas Cage, getting in a chainsaw duel with a cult demon in Mandy. But amid all that flash and pyrotechnics, 2018 also stands as the 30th anniversary of, for my money, …

Christopher McQuarrie Enters The Danger Zone For Top Gun: Maverick Script Rewrites

Mission: Impossible - Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie is teaming up with Tom Cruise again to help him with some script re-writes for Top Gun: Maverick. I guess the Danger Zone needs a little more danger, the kind that only Christopher McQuarrie can provide.

McQuarrie and Cruise have a long successful working relationship with each other so it doesn’t surprise me to see Cruise go to him for help. Cruise confirms with Empire, that this will be the tenth film that they’ve worked on together.

The script for the film was written by Peter Craig (12 Strong), Justin Marks (Counterpoint), and Eric Warren Singer (American Hustle). McQuarrie is helping rework parts of it that need the help.

Top Gun: Maverick is currently shooting in San Diego with Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) at the helm.

The sequel centers around Maverick who becomes a Top Gun flight instructor and Goose's son joins the program.

Top Gun 2 Script Gets an Assist from Mission: Impossible - Fallout Director

Top Gun 2 Script Gets an Assist from Mission: Impossible - Fallout Director
It looks like Tom Cruise has brought in one of his favorite collaborators to help polish up the script for Top Gun 2: Maverick. Christopher McQuarrie, who most recently wrote/directed Mission: Impossible - Fallout, has been brought on board to do a little additional script work on the highly-anticipated sequel to the 80s classic that helped make Cruise a star. Since the movie was recently delayed by a full year, it apparently gave them a bit of time to some polishing. What's another year for those who have been waiting to see this since 1986?

During a recent interview, while they didn't touch on the topic too much, Tom Cruise revealed that Christopher McQuarrie has been brought in to work on Top Gun 2: Maverick. This isn't meant to be cause for concern. The main script is done. It appears as though McQuarrie is just going to be adding some touches and doing a punch-up.

November 2018 VOD & Digital Releases Include The Nun, Searching, The Predator, The House With A Clock In Its Walls

  • DailyDead
Happy Halloween, everyone! While I know it’s a bittersweet feeling that our favorite holiday is finally upon us, that doesn’t mean we have to bid the horror genre farewell any time soon. In fact, there are a ton of great genre films hitting VOD and a variety of digital platforms throughout the month of November, which should help with the sting of it no longer officially being the spooky season.

November’s digital releases kick off on Friday with Possum, Welcome to Mercy, and Monster Party, and then just a few days later, get ready for Death House, Kin, The Heretics, Beyond the Sky, and Blood, Sweat and Terrors on November 6th. One week later, the cyber thriller Searching hits various platforms (and is definitely worth a watch), and there are a few more titles making their digital debuts that day as well: Blue My Mind, Lasso, and Bloody Ballet.

First Look at Vanessa Kirby in Hobbs and Shaw Shared by The Rock

First Look at Vanessa Kirby in Hobbs and Shaw Shared by The Rock
We have a new look at the upcoming Fast and Furious spin-off, Hobbs and Shaw. The movie will center on Dwayne Johnson's character Luke Hobbs, who was introduced in the fifth movie and helped turn it into the mega-franchise it is today, and Deckard Shaw, the used-to-be villain, now ally, played by Jason Statham. As revealed in this new photo shared by Johnson, they're going to be joined by Vanessa Kirby as Hattie Shaw, sister to Statham's character.

Dwayne Johnson, ever the promotional machine for his own work, took to Instagram to show off the new photo. We see Hobbs sitting on a pool table, a ton of fancy cars in the background, with Vanessa Kirby standing beside him. They both look unendingly serious and like they've been through the ringer before posing for the photo. Here's what Johnson had to say about it in his caption.

New ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ Image Reveals Vanessa Kirby as Hattie Shaw

Dwayne Johnson, who appears to have just taken over sole publicity duty on Hobbs & Shaw, revealed the first look at Vanessa Kirby in the Fast & the Furious spin-off. Kirby—who broke out on Netflix's The Crown before proving her ass-kicking skills in Mission: Impossible - Fallout—is set to play MI6 operative Hattie Shaw, sister to Jason Statham's assassin-turned-Toretto-family-member Deckard Shaw. When we talked with Statham about Hobbs & Shaw earlier this year, the actor noted that his character's relationship with his sister, as well as his mother and the …

The Kid Who Would Be King Trailer from the Director of Attack the Block

20th Century Fox has dropped the first trailer for The Kid Who Would Be King. There are several age-old stories that, for whatever reason, Hollywood will adapt over and over again, seemingly no matter what. Such is the case with the Arthurian legend, and here we have the latest big-budget big screen take on the tale. Though, admittedly, this looks pretty unique and comes with a major stable of talent attached. Not only does this serve as the long-awaited feature follow-up to Attack the Block for Joe Cornish, but the cast assembled in front of the camera is impressive as well.

The trailer starts us off with a kid trying to do the right thing in a world that is certainly very tough on kids in his shoes. Bullies will be bullies and that doesn't make his life easy. But then things get fantastical in a hurry when this unsuspecting 12-year-old finds Arthur's sword.

Director Christopher McQuarrie Has Discussed Mission: Impossible Spinoff Films with the Studio

Mission: Impossible - Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie has some ideas for expending with spinoff films. Now, I love the Mission: Impossible franchise that Tom Cruise has built over the years. I love the Ethan Hunt character and the stories that have been told about him and I want to see more stories told! But, spinoff films that focus on other characters? I’m not so sure about that.

During a Q&A after an IMAX screening of Fallout McQuarrie revealed that there’s been talk of developing spinoff films for the Mission: Impossible franchise at the studio and he’s been coming up with some ideas:

“It’s this … the spinoff, when we talked about it was like, what would the movie be? We’ve talked about many Mission spinoffs. Mission is so much about the exploits of this character. What would the spinoffs then be shaped like? Would they still be Mission: Impossible movies?

Mission: Impossible - Fallout Director Christopher McQuarrie Wants To Direct a Star Trek Film

Director Christopher McQuarrie has done some great things with the Mission: Impossible franchise. I’ve enjoyed the stories and elements that he’s brought to that franchise and it would be interesting to bring his filmmaking style to another franchise like Star Trek.

During a recent Q&A session with fans after a screening of Mission: Impossible - Fallout that was hosted by Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld, McQuarrie was asked by a fan about directing a Star Trek film and he was very much into the idea! Liefeld tweeted out McQuarrie’s response saying:

Chris McQuarrie would love a shot at Star Trek! “Yeah, give it to me!” Would prefer a movie rather than television.

— robertliefeld (@robertliefeld) September 25, 2018

McQuarrie is obviously a big fan of the series and wouldn’t mind Paramount Pictures giving him a call, so they should eventually do that! The director is in high demand right
