Arrow - S04E22 Lost in the Flood
j_forbesy19 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I'll start by saying I loved what they did with the start. I thought the was they tied the "previously on Arrow" and directly continued it on into the start of this episode was fantastic. With just 2 episodes left what really really needed was a large present from Darhk and we got this in the opening scene. They way they were able to represent how strong he currently is through him evaporating the arrows and bullets really established what Team Arrow are up against.

The Felicity show really stepped up this episode. As someone who really loved the character of Felicity and was pretty on board with the Olicity relationship at the end of season 3, I found that this episode really pushed me to my limits. I have been rather forgiving for everything around Felicity this season because of how much I loved the character when the series started, but the drama with her mum and dad in this episode while they are trying to stop world domination was just too far. The Felicity show really hit it's stride this episode and is looking to premier it's first full season at the end of June. I must say though, coming off from this, Curtis was fantastic. I've really loved the inclusion of Curtis this year and I really think that he brings this sense of the Flash show that we all love. The line about him matching up who her parents are and how it makes sense to who Felicity is, it was one of my favourite moments of the episode.

The flash backs, again, bad. Just bad. I feel like they really need to either step them up next season or ditch them all together. Earlier in the series when we first saw Oliver on the island produced some of the best moments of the whole series, to the point that the flash backs were often some of the best moments of the episodes. This season, they are getting to the point of completely cheesy.

Unfortunately this wasn't the only cheesy moment. There were so many un-logical or complete moments of bad writing that really stood out for me. Everything with Thea suddenly going from drugged to no drugged was just weird. If Oliver is that good then can he just talk anyone out of being drunk? Another big moment was when Felicity and Curtis got hacked and they said the same line at the exact same time. It was one of those moments I had to say to myself, "really, they went there?"

However we really got some great action this episode. Everything with Oliver and Diggle down in the underground suburb was great. I really think they have stepped up the action quality the last few episodes and it has been some of the highlights of the episodes. I actually thought everything with them was the highlight of this episode. This is what Arrow has turned away from and us as the audience can really tell. Back in the early seasons when it was just Oliver and Diggle in action with Felicity was their eye in the sky, this is what Arrow should be. While I loved everything with Roy and Arsenal and Sara coming back as the Black Canary, I feel like they feel into that formula of always needing a red hooded archer and a women in black, and it has really begun to cost the show in quality.

Overall, even though I dished out a fair amount of negative, I still think that the episode was pretty well paced and more the most part the storyline of it (minus Felicity drama) was pretty good. Of course we got the death of Ruva Adams which was extremely unexpected from me and I thought was well timed as it allows Darhk even further into that pit of evil which we saw starting to click into action already in the final scene. This episode managed to do just enough for me to get me excited for next week's finale, so lets hope that they can pull a great episode for the final and give this back end of the season a bit of a revival. 7/10

Hope?

It's safe to say season 4 has had its ups and downs. I've enjoyed it more than most, but I can acknowledge all of the flaws people have. 'Lost in the Flood' really showcased these flaws in what may be one of the worst episodes of the season.

Granted, there is a lot of good that came out of this episode. Oliver is actually trying to be the "hero in the light" that he spent most of the season talking about. For once, we saw him suited up in daytime. Sure, it was in the secluded Ark or Tevat Noah or whatever the heck they call it, but still, it was nice seeing the suit in all its glory. The action was also impressive. I'm sure James Bamford had something to do with that but it's always worth mentioning just how well they choreograph fights on this show and consistently keep it fresh.

While all the action was going on in the ark, Felicity had some family drama she had to deal with. Charlotte Ross is always good and Tom Amandes is no different as Felicity's parents, but there was no real reason to have this conflict at this point in the season, when all focus should be on the main issues. If it would have been handled 5 or 6 episodes ago, perhaps it would have had a better impact.

Also making an unnecessary appearance was Felicity's ex-boyfriend and worst Arrow villain of all time, cooper. Other than doing a few deeds for Darhk that ended up being irrelevant, there was no need to have him appear in this episode. Not to mention the fact that we already had to deal with Lonnie, who is still somehow snooping around the ark. The only thing of worth he has brought to the show is killing Ruve.

While all of this was going on we also had Thea under mind control. Not only did we all know she would break free of the control, but it's just lazy story telling. I always take it as a time when the writers can't find proper motivations for characters so they use mind control to throw a spin on things. Thea didn't turn out to have any sort of impact on the rest of the episode, so why even use it? Taiana also fell victim to the control of others as she was influenced by the totem that powers Reiter. But let's not talk about the flashbacks.

Overall, I appreciate Oliver doing what he says he was going to do all season in "fighting in the light" and inspiring hope, but the execution for the rest of the episode wasn't there. It was directed by Glen Winter, who has directed some of my favorite episodes with 'The Calm', 'The Promise', and 'Broken Dolls', but he's also had some rough outings like this one. Seems to be the theme of Arrow lately, inconsistency.

+Fighting in the light

+Fight scenes/choreography

+Smoak drama was well acted…

-…But why in this episode?

-Lonnie and Cooper

-Mind control is lazy

Felicity's mom needs to be the next dramatic casualty
forgotten707-119 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Not going to pull any punches here, I've hated the inclusion of Felicity's mom ever since she first appeared on Arrow. Her character adds nothing but constant bickering and annoyances that do nothing to progress the story of any episode. She, in my opinion, is complete time filler when the writer's don't know what else to do. Is it s demographic move? Are they trying to get more middle aged female viewers? Whatever the case, she needs to go. And a tragic death could help Felicity and her story by adding more personal loss. That or an extended vacation in Fiji for the next 5 seasons.

Let's talk Curtis. Interesting character, I think the addition of a very homosexual tech nerd to go along with Felicity is a good idea, honestly. But there really is only room for one techno-babble character who talks at all the wrong times, and that IS Felicity. It's part of her charm. Having a second character do the EXACT SAME THING just takes the charm out of it and makes the whole thing unbearable.

Season four has seen one of the best villains on the show, in Damien Darhk, and Neal McDonough was a fantastic choice. But season 4 in general is lacking so far behind the first two seasons it really is becoming heart breaking.

Yup, lost in the flood

With the finale only an episode away, we would all expect a suitably eventful lead-in. That is not the case with "Lost in the Flood", in fact it's probably a weaker episode of Arrow, flashbacks and all. Most of its action was bland and senseless and the drama aspect was poorly weaved into the plot. Aside from a mostly satisfying death, optimism is quickly fading for that epic finale.

Felicity!!!!
nikhil-396041 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Felicity Smoak - the first fictional character I grew from being fond of to wishing that she would die. Hate the character, not the actor.

I actually liked her in Seasons 1 and 2 and even Season 3 despite her crying almost all the time and the Oliver - Ray love triangle.

But S4 Felicity is a completely different person from S1-S3 Felicity. She is an emotionally abusive sociopath and a complete hypocrite - its OK for her to lie to Oliver, but if he does the same, she goes all self-righteous.

She blows up a whole town with a nuclear missile and doesn't even cry or become berserk. Instead we get Smoak family drama featuring Curtis. A nuclear bomb just blew up 20 minutes ago and she is fighting with her mom!!! She even lets her ex-boyfriend die a horrible death instead of mercy killing or letting someone else mercy kill him.

Other outright stupid stuff - Oliver and Diggle find Thea in the underground Fallout 4 town and she is brainwashed into killing them. Oliver using his power of speech convinces Thea to fight back and stop Anarky, a 20 something who is able to rig the whole town to blow and capture Ruve and Darhk jr despite security forces looking for him and even Malcolm aka "I was Ra's Al Ghul". Thea accidentally blasts the town. Anarky holds his own against suddenly incompetent-at-fighting Oliver and Thea. It's like he was trained by Deathstroke, Ra's and Batman/Nightwing. Ruve dies and Darhk jr is saved by Oliver and co.

Well this proves it, no one in their right minds would want to live in Star city.

Another filler episode.
kjv-0622923 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Malcolm looks like a complete fool in his "costume" the small number of arrows won't do much good. He has proven he is incompetent. All talk. Why does anyone listen to him?

Donna has to go. Super ditzy and annoying.

You have to be kidding by having her carrying the mask around the island. What a joke.

Why the fake voice in front of people who don't know Oliver? He certainly doesn't scare anyone in his tight green costume.
