Taika Waititi Says ‘Hollywood Is Running Out of Ideas,’ but Not Diverse Filmmakers — Tiff
Taika Waititi isn’t afraid to say it: Hollywood needs some new inspiration. But the “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” director is happy to look for a silver lining. At a Monday morning Toronto International Film Festival Master Class, where the New Zealand filmmaker sat for an hour-long conversation with the festival’s artistic director Cameron Bailey, Waititi got honest about the current state of the industry.

“We’re in a really cool place right now: Hollywood is running out of ideas,” Waititi said. “They are scrambling for ideas and stories, and where do they turn? Indigenous people, ethnic people, they turn to Korea, Japan, they turn to anywhere outside of America for films that they can remake for things that are outside of their comfort zone, because that’s where the interesting stuff is.”

He said that meant new opportunities for a range of filmmakers to produce original work,

Taikia Waititi On Being Maori & Playing Adolph Hitler In New Film: “What Better ‘F— You’ To That Guy?!”

Sorry Marvel fans, Taika Waititi was not asked any questions about James Gunn or the potential job opening on “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” during his Tiff Masterclass. Instead, the filmmaker discussed how he came into being a filmmaker and the upcoming “Bubbles” and “Jojo Rabbit” films he’s working on.

Thor: Ragnarok Director In Talks To Helm Another Marvel Movie

While it really should’ve come as a surprise to no one, Marvel halted production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 earlier today and although the irreverent supergroup won’t be headed in front of the camera anytime soon, Kevin Feige might’ve already started the search for James Gunn’s replacement.

Last week, despite talk that the House of Mouse might consider reinstating the filmmaker, The Walt Disney Company put their foot down and reportedly not only was Feige supportive of the ruling, but is also said to be spearheading the search for a new director once back in Los Angeles. Well, evidently, he’s back in the Golden State now.

According to Variety, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi recently met with Marvel, though it’s unclear what project the two parties discussed. Granted, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is where your mind would intrinsically wander, but

Ryan Reynolds Says ‘Deadpool 2’ Was Almost About ‘Deadpool Trying to Steal the Big Red Chair from ‘The Voice’
No talent was announced in advance of Saturday’s “Deadpool 2” panel at San-Diego Comic Con, but big names from the Fox sequel showed up, including Ryan Reynolds. The film’s star and producer was joined by director David Leitch, fellow actors Zazie Beetz (Domino), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), and Stefan Kapičić (Colussus), as well as his co-screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Moderating duties fell to Karan Soni, who plays a New York City cab driver in the franchise.

No mention was made of “X-Force,” the next film featuring Reynolds and Beetz’s characters, which reportedly begins shooting in October. Instead, the group spent an hour promoting the Blu-ray release of “Deadpool 2” (August 21), set to feature an extended cut with jokes and scenes omitted from the theatrical version.

Here are seven things we learned about the actor behind “the merc with a mouth.”

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle director gives an update on Jumanji 3

Last month, Dwayne Johnson officially confirmed that Jake Kasdan will be back in the director’s chair for next year’s sequel to the smash hit action adventure Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and now the filmmaker has provided an update on the as-yet-untitled Jumanji 3 during an interview with Collider.

“The idea is to make the movie in the beginning of the year if we can get it all worked out,” said Kasdan. “We have not started figuring out the locations yet. Hawaii was a big part of Welcome to the Jungle and we love Hawaii, so it would be great to go back there. I think we’re getting very close to cracking the script. It’s a complicated little puzzle, but I think we got some good stuff cooking.”

Eiff 2018: ‘Hearts Beat Loud’ Review: Dir. Brett Haley (2018)

Hearts Beat Loud review: A father and daughter form an unlikely songwriting duo in the summer before she leaves for college. This could be one of the best of the year.

Hearts Beat Loud review by Awais Irfan.

Hearts Beat Loud review

Every Summer brings about with it that surprising, feel-good film of the year – whether it’s the likes of The Big Sick, or Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Chef or Begin Again. This year, that film is Brett Haley’s Hearts Beat Loud and it might just be one of the best things you’ll see in 2018.

Frank (Nick Offerman) has owned the Red Hook Records store for 17 years, finally deciding it’s time to close up shop; his daughter Sam (Kiersey Clemons) is about to head off to study pre-med at college too, and in a last bout to spend time with her before she leaves, the pair

‘Three Identical Strangers’ and ‘Leave No Trace’ Continue Strong Summer Specialty Box Office

‘Three Identical Strangers’ and ‘Leave No Trace’ Continue Strong Summer Specialty Box Office
Two impressive new openings build on the ongoing response to two stellar documentaries already doing strong box office. “Leave No Trace” (Bleecker Street) from acclaimed director Debra Granik (“Winter’s Bone”) and “Three Identical Strangers” (Neon), a compelling documentary about three triplets reunited in early adulthood, both opened well in initial dates (in many of the same theaters).

With documentaries “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” (Focus Features) and “Rbg” (Magnolia) both expanding well, the specialized market is improving this summer. However, it’s still difficult for most leading titles playing in a few hundred theaters, even backed by great reviews, to get over the modest $3 million mark. It is critical that a few break through.

Sam Rockwell on Playing a Nazi in Taika Waititi’s ‘Jojo Rabbit’ and the Bob Fosse Biopic He’s Dreaming of Making
Sam Rockwell isn’t slowing down. A few months after winning every award under the sun for his performance in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” the actor is back in theaters with another distinctly American film: “Woman Walks Ahead,” which required him to saddle up as a cowboy and learn the Lakota language alongside Jessica Chastain. The recent Oscar winner isn’t stateside for the release of Susanna White’s 1890’s period piece about Sitting Bull and the woman who traveled across the country to paint his portrait, however — he’s in Prague, where production on “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” and “Thor: Ragnarok” director Taika Waiti’s outrageous-sounding “Jojo Rabbit” is underway.

“It is the greatest script I’ve read in so long,” Rockwell said over the phone of the dark comedy that Waititi hopes will “piss off a lot of racists.” Asked about his character, Captain Klenzendorf, the actor

MoviePass Boosts ‘American Animals’ at Specialty Box Office

Sundance debut “American Animals” (The Orchard), the twisty docudrama hybrid recreation of a high-stakes Kentucky college heist, got a boost on its way to dominating the specialty box office this weekend. It’s one of the best platform releases in recent weeks. And it was a surprise.

The Orchard partnered with MoviePass when it acquired “American Animals” for a reported $3 million. Clearly, that extra MoviePass marketing push made a significant difference.

Meanwhile two current successes, “Rbg” (Magnolia) and “First Reformed” (A24), continue to impress at different stages of expansion, with the former heading toward becoming Magnolia’s biggest grosser.
