The 'engagement dinner' scene was filmed at Watermark, a restaurant at Main & Chestnut in Ventura, California.

There is clearly no engine in Carl and Mike's car. When the steel beam comes to rest, it's not sitting on the engine. It's sitting way down in the frame. This was done to make the damage to car look more dramatic.
