‘Superman & Lois’ has garnered praise as one of CW’s top superhero shows. Despite CW’s restructuring and cancelation of many projects, ‘Superman & Lois’ secured its season 4 renewal shortly before the season 3 finale. Although loosely connected to the Arrowverse, the show has distinguished itself from other CW superhero series, which have faced criticism in recent years.
Season 4 has been confirmed as the show’s final season, with reduced episodes, a smaller main cast, and a smaller writing team due to budget constraints. Despite these changes, an iconic character, Jimmy Olsen, is set to appear, with Douglas Smith cast in the role according to TVLine.
In the show, Jimmy is depicted as an outgoing young adult who is known for being the life of the party at work. Despite working closely with Clark, he struggles to break through Clark’s reserved demeanor. Unaware of Clark’s secret identity as Superman, Jimmy is determined to befriend him.

‘Superman & Lois’ is often touted as being one of the best CW’s superhero-based shows. This is why even following CW restructuring after many projects were written off, ‘Superman & Lois’ managed to score its season 4 renewal just weeks prior to the season 3 finale. Although unofficially a part of Arrowverse, the show managed to distance itself from other CW’s similar projects that were regarded as straight-up bad in the last few years, especially looking back at the disappointing Flash finale.
A few months ago it was confirmed that Season 4 would be the show’s last, even though the viewership remained steady, it wasn’t nearly enough to justify a high CGI budget. Season 4 is set to return with fewer episodes, with much of its main cast missing and a much smaller writers team. But the show must go on and so one iconic character will reportedly appear in the show.

One Life and Slow Horses director James Hawes thinks AI will be able to write whole TV shows in three to five years’ time. More on that below.
Another day, another scary AI story. Depending on who you ask, AI is either the biggest threat or a major opportunity when it comes to making art, whether it’s writing, film, TV, painting or photography.
The latest creative talent to offer their two cents on the AI zeitgeist is director James Hawes. Best known for his work in television with Slow Horses, Black Mirror and The Alienist, Hawes recently made his feature film debut with One Life, starring Anthony Hopkins – a film we were big fans of at Film Stories.
Deadline now reports that Hawes thinks we’re only a handful of years away from a TV show generated entirely by AI.

“The Exorcist” is, rightfully, heralded as one of the greatest, scariest films of all time. And in the 50 years since its 1973 release, filmmakers have tried, repeatedly, to recapture the magic that made the original film so special, to mixed results.
The latest attempt is “The Exorcist: Believer,” from director David Gordon Green, which returns Ellen Burstyn to the franchise for the first time since 1973 and focuses on a new phenomenon – synchronized possession. It’s meant to be the first of a new trilogy of films. And its release (it’ll be on PVOD on October 24) is enough to have us look back at the entire franchise thus far. Which films are scary good and which are ones that you’d rather spider-walk down the stairs to get away from? Read on to find out.

A showrunners picket at Fox that started as a way to show solidarity during the strike ended up raising close to $45,000 for crew members who have been adversely affected by the work stoppage.
Strike Captain Amy Berg encouraged showrunners who attended the Sept. 12 picket to bring along gift cards so she could distribute them to support staff in need. More than 300 high-powered scribes, including Steve Levitan, Shawn Ryan, Aline Brosh-McKenna, Carlton Cuse, Rene Balcer, Jack Burditt, Mike Scully, Matt Selman, Andy Gordon, Tucker Cawley and David Shore, walked the line that day.
At today’s IATSE appreciation day at Fox, Berg distributed the gift cards to 115 people. She plans to mail more out this week to crew members.
“I was looking at all these amazing funds we have out there, but noticed that most require a long application process which can delay people getting the help they need,” Berg told Deadline. “I just thought, what could we do that offered immediate assistance?”
Those who participated in today’s IATSE appreciation picket received at least $150 word of cards to grocery stores and retail outlets like Target.
“Things everyone can use,” said Berg. “I basically started a nonprofit in one week, thanks to the generosity of my fellow showrunners.”
Showrunners have already contributed more than $500,000 recently to the Entertainment Community Fund. (Click for the showrunner donation link). Most of the donors have been anonymous.
There’s renewed optimism that the WGA and AMPTP can reach a deal now that both parties have agreed to meet tomorrow.
The WGA sent out a note to members confirming the talks: “The WGA and AMPTP now have a confirmed schedule to bargain this week, starting on Wednesday. You might not hear from us in the coming days while we are negotiating, but know that our focus is getting a fair deal for writers as soon as possible. We’ll reach out again when there is something of significance to report. In the meantime, please continue to demonstrate your commitment and unity by coming out to the picket lines – for yourselves and fellow writers, SAG-AFTRA, other unions’ members, and all those in our community who are impacted by the strikes.”...

LGBTQ+ Pride Month is upon us, a perfect time to celebrate queer cinema — especially the more challenging stories about acceptance that make us question the unruly standards of society that we've lived in over the years. Blue Jean is a new film that's now in theaters, which follows "Jean" (Rosy McEwen), a closeted female gym teacher in 1988 England amid Margaret Thatcher's conservative reign and Section 28 along with it.
Despite the difficult journey she must navigate, there is certainly much to celebrate in this powerful LGBTQ+ drama. Sure, it's tough to watch at times, as the conflicted protagonist lives in perpetual fear of revealing her sexuality publicly. That's especially the case, given that there's a curious new student at school (played to perfection by Lucy Halliday) who keeps showing up at the gay-friendly pub that Jean and her girlfriend frequent. Though uncomfortable we're gripped from start to finish thanks to...

Women in action roles have become more and more common in Hollywood over the last few decades, and Sheroes arrives this summer to prove it once again. Paramount Pictures is preparing to release the new film written and directed by Jordan Gertner, producer of Spring Breakers.
Putting a group of women at the forefront once again, Gertner presents a new story full of action, crime, shooting, explosions and fun. Check out the trailer below:
The plot follows four friends who travel to Thailand for fun and a cultural adventure, only to end up in a conflict they didn't imagine. When one of the friends is kidnapped by a drug cartel mafia boss, they must unite and test their unique skills to save her and survive an epic battle.
Sheroes is Gertner’s feature directorial debut, after being the producer behind some really interesting titles besides Spring Breakers such as The Virgin Suicides and London Fields.

Ron Howard has lined up an all-star cast for his next feature film, dubbed Origin of Species. Deadline reports that the survival thriller, written by Noah Pink (Tetris), will star Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts and the Secrets of Dumbledore), Ana De Armas (Blonde), Alicia Vikander (Tomb Raider), and Daniel Brühl (All Quiet on the Western Front). The project will be shopped at the upcoming Cannes market with plans to start filming in late 2023 in Queensland, Australia.
Origins of Species is said to be inspired by a true story, based on two different accounts of the same event. The filmmakers describe the movie as a "darkly comic tale of murder and survival, set around a group of eclectic characters who abandon civilization for the Galapagos. They are all searching for the answer to that ever-pressing question that plagues us all: what is the meaning of life.”

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we reassess the unsettled limited series races.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! If the first Monday in May is reserved for the Met Gala, I can only assume the first Friday in May is all about the 2023 limited series Emmy race. That classification is maybe the most chaotic of the main Emmys races this year — we’re long past the days of “The Queen’s Gambit” and “Mare of Easttown.” At the moment, according to our odds, “Monster,” “Black Bird,” “Beef,” “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” “White House Plumbers” and “Daisy Jones & the Six” make up the expected list of limited series nominees. Looking at that list, I’m left with one thought: Sure? I’m a flagship member of the “Fleishman...

TNT's The Alienist ran for two extremely popular seasons, and now there is a lot of anticipation for season 3. Debuting in 2018, The Alienist is set in late-19th century New York and follows a psychiatrist who assembles a crack team to track a ruthless serial killer. Noted for its high production values and interesting approach to historical fiction, The Alienist brings to life the Caleb Carr novel of the same name, as well as its follow-up. Besides its gripping mystery plots, the series also uses its historical setting to comment on society both in the past and in the modern day.
While the critical response to season 1 was somewhat tepid, season 2 of The Alienist was commended for its darker tone and a larger emphasis on the ensemble of characters. Season 2 went off the air in August 2020, and viewers were left in the dark regarding the future of the clever thriller.

In addition to being a thoughtful series about misplaced rage, mental health, and the “myth of the model minority,” the Netflix show “Beef” is also one of the year’s best party playlists. Created by Lee Sung Jin, the show has been praised for its soundtrack of late ‘90s and early ‘00s pop classics from bands like Incubus, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Bush. “I had a lot of the songs in the outline stage. When you do that as a writer, you assume you’re never going to get those songs. But thanks to A24, Netflix and our music supervisor, Tiffany Anders, we got every single song I wanted,” Lee said in an earlier interview with the Los Angeles Times. “It took some personal letters to some frontman bands, but it all worked out.”
But the songs are just one part of the “Beef” musical sound. Threaded between the needle...

Dakota Fanning (The Equalizer 3) has added to an already stacked dance card, closing a deal to lead the buzzy supernatural thriller The Watchers, which will mark the feature debut of writer-director Ishana Night Shyamalan.

William Friedkin's "The Exorcist" is one of the best horror movies ever made, which makes it by extension one of the best movies ever made at all. But it's not just a powerful dramatic exploration of faith in an increasingly secular society, and it's not just a terrifically scary motion picture that stunned audiences; it was also a gigantic mega-blockbuster by any reasonable measure. If you adjust for inflation to determine how much "The Exorcist" would have made theatrically at today's ticket prices, you'll find it would have made over a billion dollars domestically, ranking it the ninth-highest-grossing movie in the history of the American box office. That's more than "Avengers: Endgame" or "Avatar."
So regardless of how excellent the original film was, "The Exorcist" was still a huge financial success, and we all know what happens to huge financial successes -- they get sequels. And "The Exorcist" had some very strange sequels.

One of the twisted joys of “Beef” is how the show escalates the drama between Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) after they cross paths in a road rage incident. The main enabler of the show’s anger management issues is the edit, which can wield a cut like a sledgehammer to emphasize or undercut a moment. But maybe the most fun way that “Beef” accelerates Amy’s and Danny’s revenge spiral is the placement of each episode’s opening title card.
The title card shots in “Beef” are abrupt but visually convey everything that makes the characters so flawed: Each card looks on its surface like a museum piece carrying some deeper artistic merit, especially given how the show’s score hypes up the shots. But that pretension to one specific meaning is betrayed by the font over the imagery and the cut to the episode titles – the score,...

CAA has signed rising British star Rosy McEwen.
The actor, who was named to Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch for 2020, was not previously represented in the U.S., and will now be represented by the agency in all areas.
In 2022, McEwen won the British Independent Film Award for best lead performance for “Blue Jean.” She starred as Jean, a closeted teacher pushed to the brink when a new student threatens to expose her sexuality as Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government plans to pass a law stigmatizing gays and lesbians in 1988 England.
Variety exclusively announced that McEwen would take on the role — her first lead — in the film, written and directed by Georgia Oakley. “Jean is a woman forced to wear multiple masks in the different areas of her life, and as such she has this sort of taut, cloistered energy that Rosy has absolutely mastered,” Oakley stated at the time.

When Rosy McEwen was filming the Eighties-set lesbian drama Blue Jean, something strange started happening in the middle of the night. “I’d wake up and burst into tears,” says the actor, her icy blue eyes wide at the memory. “My breathing would start to go and I’d just sob uncontrollably. It happened a few times, and I didn’t even feel sad. There was just something that needed to come out.”
McEwen’s feelings were quite literally spilling out of her because, for every day of the three-month shoot, she was pushing down all the fear and frustration felt by her character Jean, a gay Pe teacher working in the time of Section 28. The law was brought in under Thatcher in 1988 to “prohibit the promotion of homosexuality” in schools. It had a crippling effect on queer communities and effectively slammed the closet door on generations of LGBT+ people.
