I'm willing to let it develop
23 January 2018 | by See all my reviews

While the subject matter is interesting, the costumes impeccable and the cinematography excellent, I found the overall acting to be uneven at best. Dakota Fanning as Saras introduction was well done, but her second monologue was flat as if she read it off a que card, with no tone or inflection, hitting no words or ideas harder than any other. I am sorry to say that the gentleman who plays Roosevelt, Brian Geraghty, could be replaced by anyone from a local high school production, the exchange in his office with the protaganist and later with the criminal element was just painful to watch. He obviously needed direction he didn't get.

Speaking of direction, the mother of the two children showing up and verbally accosting the Alienist, years later but in a timely manner for the protaganist and storyline seemed trite. For the Isaacson brothers who were to conduct the postmortem to throw out their heritage/religion served no purpose at all. There were several less than well done moments but, for me at least, these stood out as especially poor and knocked me off the narrative thread.

The variety of accents employed by the cast was excellent and rang true, as New York at the time was (and still is) quite a melting pot of immigrants. I thought that much of the cinematography was movie quality. But costuming was the real winner, and should probably receive some nomination.

Opening a new series is never easy. I understand that in this 10 episode run they employ several different directors. I hope that the series improves up to its potential. I am willing to give it a chance.
