“Midnight Sun,” the new animated “Twilight” series based on Stephenie Meyer’s novel of the same name, has landed at Netflix.

The streamer has granted a straight-to-series order for the animated show, which has officially begun development, Netflix announced Wednesday. The project, which hails from Lionsgate Television, is described as a “retelling of ‘Twilight’ from the perspective of Edward Cullen.”

The news comes months after Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns confirmed the company would be shopping around the series during a Morgan Stanley media conference in March, saying, “I think there’ll be a lot of interest in that.”

The series was first reported to be in development at Lionsgate TV in April 2023, with Meyer’s involvement expected.

Meyer will executive produce alongside Meghan Hibbett for Fickle Fish Films, while additional EPs include Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen for Temple Hill Entertainment and Erik Feig and Samie Kim Falvey for Picturestart.

The project was first reported to be in early development back in April 2023 at studio Lionsgate Television. Michael Burns, vice chairman of Lionsgate, confirmed in March 2024 that it would be an animated series. Netflix is now developing the project.

“Midnight Sun” was originally released in 2020. It serves as a retelling of the first “Twilight” book from the perspective of Edward Cullen rather than Bella Swan.

The “Elvis” director recut his 2008 epic “Australia” for a Hulu limited series titled “Faraway Downs.” The film followed an English aristocrat (Nicole Kidman) who inherits a cattle range run by a cattle drover (Hugh Jackman). The limited series will have a new ending and a new soundtrack; “Australia” originally shot three endings, with only one making it into the theatrical release.

“I was inspired to re-approach my film ‘Australia’ to create ‘Faraway Downs’ because of the way episodic storytelling has been reinvigorated by the streaming world,” Luhrmann said in a press statement. “With over two million feet of film from the original piece, my team and I were able to revisit anew the central themes of the work.”

Six-episode limited series “Faraway Downs” will premiere at the closing night of the inaugural SXSW Sydney Screen Festival October 21, with Luhrmann in attendance.

Madrid-based agency Feelsales has picked up worldwide sales rights to indie social drama film “Third Week,” by long term New York-based Catalan writer-director Jordi Torrent (“The Redemption of the Fish”).

Ron Cephas Jones, who won two Emmy Awards for his role as William Hill on This Is Us, has died. He was 66.

The actor died due to a long-standing pulmonary issue. The Gersh Agency confirmed his death on Sunday. People magazine first reported the news.

“Throughout the course of his career, his warmth, beauty, generosity, kindness and heart were felt by anyone who had the good fortune of knowing him,” a statement to People read. “He began his career at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe and his love for the stage was present throughout his entire career, including his recent Tony nominated and Drama Desk Award winning performance for his role in Clyde’s on Broadway. Ron’s inner beauty and soul was evident to the huge audience from his multi-Emmy award winning performance on This is Us.”

Born on Jan. 8, 1957, in Paterson, New Jersey, Jones went on to pursue a career in acting.
