‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Easily Tops DVD, Blu-ray Disc Sales Charts

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” debuted atop the national home video sales charts by a wide margin the week ended March 31.

The eighth numbered installment of the “Star Wars” saga and the ninth live-action film in the franchise took in $620 million at the domestic box office and $1.33 billion worldwide — making it the top earner released in 2017. The Rian Johnson-directed film easily took the No. 1 spot on both the Npd VideoScan overall disc sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart.

Dropping to No. 2 on both charts in its second week, after debuting in the top spot a week earlier, was Sony Pictures’ “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” which sold 29% as many copies as Last Jedi during the week.

Disney’s “Coco,” in its fifth week, moved up a slot to No. 3 on both charts.

Aidy Bryant Chooses Roles Carefully After Being Sent ‘Demeaning’ Scripts Where Her ‘Body Is the Punchline’
Saturday Night Live” favorite Aidy Bryant co-stars in the upcoming comedy “I Feel Pretty,” which received criticism following its trailer debut for being fat-shaming and insensitive to people struggling with body weight issues. The film stars Amy Schumer as an insecure woman who suffers a head injury that causes her to feel confident and beautiful in her looks. Bryant recently shared a photo with Schumer and co-star Sasheer Zamata, but an angry fan slammed the movie in the comments section.

“I won’t be supporting a movie that continues to perpetuate fat phobia and the notion that for a woman to be confident she needs to look a certain (read: thin, white, rich) way,” the commenter wrote. “The previews are extremely problematic and as a fat woman in Hollywood, who has thousands of fat girls who look up to you, I hope you will consider the message this film sends.

Oscar Nominations: Score and Song Surprises Include Taylor Swift and Mariah Carey Snubs
Two major figures in pop music, songwriter Diane Warren and Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, could walk away with their first Academy Awards as a result of today’s nominations in the music categories.

There were no major surprises in the original song race and only one minor surprise in the score category.

Oscar’s music branch confirmed what many pundits predicted going into this morning’s announcement: that “Remember Me” and “This Is Me,” the songs at the emotional core of the animated “Coco” and live-action “The Greatest Showman” respectively, would be nominated.

A win for either on March 4 would give their songwriters a second Academy Award: “This Is Me,” was written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who won for “La La Land’s” “City of Stars” last year; and “Remember Me” was by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, who won for another Disney film, “Let It Go” from 2013’s “Frozen.”
