Emelie
6 January 2017 | by ArgemalucoSee all my reviews

The horror films about nannies usually come in two varieties: 1) The innocent nanny is threatened by a maniac killer or supernatural force (The House of the Devil, Babysitter Wanted); and 2) The psycho nanny puts the children and/or family she should take care of in danger (The Sitter -1991-, The Guardian). Emelie belongs to the second category, and it decently fulfills with the requirements of the sub-genre, establishing a normal situation which gradually becomes nightmarish, and adding the correct quantity of madness and violence to make the danger feel real. However, screenwriter Rich Herbeck leaves many questions unanswered, something which avoided me from being completely satisfied by Emelie. I have to clear out the fact that I have never been bothered by ambiguous films which refrain from explaining every single detail; but in this occasion, I felt it like an incomplete story. Nevertheless, Emelie managed to keep me entertained, mainly due to the perfect performance from Sarah Bolger in the leading role, displaying a precise handling of her character's emotions. The youngsters Joshua Rush, Carly Adams and Thomas Blair also make a very good work, because their reactions are so natural that it's easier for the spectator to assimilate the most improbable elements of the screenplay, as well as get worried for their characters' safety. In conclusion, I can give Emelie a moderate recommendation as an entertaining experience which, despite not being highly memorable, offers a competent direction, solid performances and a mystery which is interesting in spite of its logical holes and lack of a concrete resolution.
