DEUTSCHLAND 83 "Able Archer" (2015)

DEUTSCHLAND 83 is cold war television series made in Germany. The 8 episodes are set in 1983 during the height of the sabre rattling between the West and the Soviet Eastern Bloc. Stuck in the middle are the two Germany's, East and West. This is the eighth and last episode of the first series.

Jonas Nay plays an East German border officer who is seconded into the East German Stasi. The Foreign Intelligence section needs a body to slip into West Germany to spy on a German General. The man, Ulrich Noethen, is in charge of working with his American counterpart to set up Pershing Missile sites.

In this episode the East German agent Nay has come into info that the current tense situation is all a war game by NATO. The ever so paranoid Eastern Bloc and their masters in Moscow believe it is all a ploy to launch a first strike. Nothing Nay says is believed by the East German Intelligence services.

It does not help that the reports are being edited by Stasi officer, Sylvester Groth to read like the Soviets want. The world is roaring to the brink and only Nay seems to realize the danger. After spilling the beans to the West German Officer, Noethen, whom he is assigned to spy on, he bolts.

He manages to escape the West German security forces and makes it over the border to East Berlin. There, he discovers that the daughter of Noethen, Lisa Tomaschewsky has been grabbed up by the Stasi. They what to question Tomaschewsky for any info she might have about her father. Nay manages to spring the girl and get her to the West German embassy.

Now Nay rushes to the Stasi headquarters to try and get them to listen. The Soviets have decided to launch a first strike of their own to beat the supposed NATO strike. Nay gets the Soviets and his East German bosses to finally take him seriously, averting a nuclear war.

A few of the loose ends from previous episodes come together, but plenty of new ones are thrown at the viewer. There is a definite need for the watcher to apply a bit of suspension of disbelief here.

All in all, the series is a good looking production which moves along at a fair clip and supplies plenty of action.
