Storyline

A successful businessman from Bloemfontein, South Africa, Danie du Toit's doorbell rings in the middle of the night. Outside the rain is pouring down. He puts on his gown, walks to the front door and switches on the light.. A slender rain-soaked figure stands with her back turned to him. When she turns around, he recognizes the face that stares at him from underneath the hoody. It's his stepdaughter that he hasn't seen in years. "It's me, Anna" she says calmly. The hate seeps through her words, just like the rain that pours over them. Then she lifts the gun... The movie "Dis ek, Anna" is about the sexual abuse of Anna Bruwer by her stepfather over a period of eight years . Silent Anna, she called herself because she could not tell anyone what had happened between them. Not her mother, not her best friend and not even her own father. In the story, the viewer becomes intimately involved in the child's twilight world of shame , threats and silence. Written by Niel van Deventer

Still haunts me
7 August 2018 | by See all my reviews

I only watched this movie last year (2017) notwithstanding the serious hype surrounding it during its release. I'm lazy that way. Whilst it never shows any actual sexual act of molestation, it was probably one of the most difficult movies to watch. It grips you in a way that you want to see what happens, I HAD TO see what happens. Hoping and rooting for the ending I want. I thought the acting was brilliant, disturbingly so. The hate and disgust and repulsion I felt for the step father and the mother was palpable. The empathy for Anna and the hopelessness of her situation drove me to drink. Excellent film, hard to watch at times but highlights a very real and much too common reality where kids are encouraged to rather keep quiet by a broken society. All that lacked for me was someone actually giving the mom a high five. With a brick. In the face.
