Patricia Heaton celebrated three years of sobriety in July and says that’s partly due to a conversation she had with her late Everybody Loves Raymond co-star Peter Boyle.
Speaking to former ABC News anchor Elizabeth Vargas on the latest episode of the Heart of the Matter podcast, Heaton detailed some of the defining moments around her addictions and past drug use. That includes a conversation she had with Boyle, who died in 2006, around how he stayed sober and committed to never drink during cast get-togethers after work.

There's nothing like a good old-fashioned vow renewal to stir up a few tears.
They spent most of the hour trying to figure out how to stop August Heart and his army of Godspeed clones from destroying Central City. But The Flash saved its best content for the final scene.
"Heart of the Matter, Part 2" was the finale of The Flash Season 7, but it felt more like the last five episodes of a season condensed down into one hour. It was hard to keep up with at times, and its only saving grace was Barry and Iris and their love for one another.
The threat of Godspeed has been building in the background of this show for a couple of seasons now, and it was time for Barry finally to face off against the villain speedster.
Unfortunately, the payoff was less than satisfactory.
August, I know that things seem really hopeless right now.

This The Flash article contains spoilers.
The Flash Season 7 Episode 18
The Flash Season 7 ends as it lived, with a mixed-bag finale that is generally entertaining to watch, but that doesn’t make much sense if you look at it too closely. “Heart of the Matter, Part 2” gives us some highly entertaining visuals (the Flash family runs together at last!) and the surprising return of an old enemy, but, on the whole, this isn’t an hour that feels like a conclusion that’s especially worthy of the story that kicked off last week.
But despite the multiple head-scratchingly bizarre narrative swerves in the second half of this two-parter, a ray of light remains: Nora and Bart Allen. The arrival of Barry and Iris’ kids from the future provides a positive burst of pure delight in an otherwise dour season, and one can only hope they’ll stick around to sprinkle...

Spoiler Alert: The following story contains details from the Season 7 finale of The Flash.
While The Flash‘s Season 7 finale was packed with action and violence, it also offered up happy endings for the superhero otherwise known as Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and others.
Tonight’s finale, titled “Heart of the Matter, Part 2,” comes one week after the CW series’ 150th episode. The 151st sees August Heart/Godspeed (Karan Oberoi) and his army of clones creating chaos in Central City and threatening to destroy it.
Speedster allies fighting on The Flash’s side of the Godspeed Civil War include his wife Iris (Candice Patton), as well as his future children, Nora-West/Xs (Jessica Parker Kennedy) and Bart/Impulse (Jordan Fisher), the latter of whom recovers early on, after being put in a coma by Godspeed. Others getting in on the fight are Speed Force Nora (Michelle Harrison) and The Flash...

Barry and Iris’ own kid, Jordan Fisher, told TVLine that The Flash fans would come out of next week’s Season 7 finale feeling “very, very happy, very satisfied” — and now we know why.
Because somehow, amidst ending the Godspeed war and possibly also eliminating Bart’s arch enemy from the timeline, “WestAllen” will renew their wedding vows (as first reported on Wednesday by ETOnline). Check out a dozen photos here.

The following The Flash article contains spoilers through Season 7, Episode 17.
The Flash Season 7 Episode 17
Look, as much as it hurts my heart to admit it, The Flash Season 7 has frequently been a bumpy ride. Its storylines have run the gamut from the truly dreadful (anything involving the Forces of Nature) to the nonsensical (the inexplicable Joe West and Kristen Kramer team-up), with a few dollops of brilliance sprinkled throughout.
Therefore, it makes sense that some of us (read: me) were pretty nervous about what might happen in the show’s landmark 150th episode, which has been touted all season as a big, fanservice-filled deal, complete with the introduction of Jordan Fisher’s Bart Allen.
To be fair, “Heart of the Matter, Part 1” still struggles with some of the same problems that have plagued the rest of this season. No one would have noticed if such an important anniversary episode skipped...

The CW revealed a first-look image at Jordan Fisher’s appearance as Bart Allen/Impluse, the future son of Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Iris West-Allen (Candice Patton), on The Flash.
The image, which you can see below, features Fisher in Impulse’s signature white-and-red suit. Bart is the fastest teenager on the planet, but due to his penchant for wildly impulsive behavior, stunned parents Barry and Iris will have their hands full trying to teach their new son patience. But it’s a task they’ll have to accomplish, in order for their family to work together and stop Team Flash’s biggest threat yet.
Bart will team up with his sister, Nora/Xs (Jessica Parker Kennedy), as well as his parents for “Heart of the Matter, Part 1,” the 150th episode of The Flash.

Zac Clark is sharing his sobriety journey. During the Feb. 9 episode of the podcast Heart of the Matter with Elizabeth Vargas, the 37-year-old Bachelorette alum looked back at his history with addiction and his road to recovery. Zac, who has been sober since age 27, said he was offered his first drink when he was in eighth grade. "Whether it was seventh and eighth grade or eighth and ninth grade or whatever it was, we'd go to this Christmas party every year," he recalled. "And it's kind of like the older kids take the younger kids out back and give them their first beer." After it happened, Zac went back to his parents and cried. "I was offered a beer and...

Elizabeth Vargas didn’t seek to become a prominent voice for the recovery community. But the longtime ABC News anchor was put on that path nearly a decade ago when her treatment for alcohol addiction and anxiety became tabloid fodder. Once the news was out, Vargas decided she’d better be the one to tell her story. She wrote a much-praised book, “Between Breaths: A Memoir of Panic and Addiction,” in 2016. Last year she launched a podcast, “Heart of the Matter,” with the Partnership to End Addiction nonprofit advocacy group. The series is devoted to candid conversations about addiction and mental health crises. Vargas was also just tapped by Fox to host the revival of “America’s Most Wanted,” scheduled to premiere in March.
