Storyline

is a film about the feminine. Visiting the celebrations of the Virgin Mary's (Marias) from Brasil, Cuba, México, Peru and Nicarágua, the director Joana Mariani observes the similarities and disparities among their cultures, and listen to women who have their very particular stories about life, faith and devotion. The result is a very singular film that shows that the image of the Virgin Mary (Maria) is a lot more than a religious figure or the mother of Christ.

visually rich and beautiful, but lacking in content
29 November 2016 | by xdddre-22083See all my reviews

This film, beyond its beautiful direction and photography, does a very interesting job in an audiovisual level, presenting an overview on the women of Latin America, its ethnic variety and its religious culture. However, despite the beauty of form and the touching content in some ways, it doesn't strike as a very deep documentary - definitely, beyond the emotional level, it could have explored a lot more (in a scientific, sociological level) the complexity of gender, miscegenation and religious issues in the Latin American society. Despite the quality of the images and the subject chosen, the film unfortunately seem to have a much more religious and emotional appeal than a journalistic, scientific or informative one.
