The show follows first responders (Police, Fire, and EMS) in New Orleans working the night shift 2000 hours - 0400 hours. Cameras follow firefighters to their calls, EMS to patients' homes or whatever situation they may be called to, as well as Police chases or patrols.

In 2016, City if New Orleans cancelled their contracts with A&E, which were First 48 and Nightwatch. This decision came after the defense team in a triple capital homicide case attempted to accuse First 48 film makers of withholding footage that would have found the defendent not guilty. Even though the judge confessed that the defense's accusation was obviously a final attempt to turn the tide away from the prosecutio, she admitted she wished New Orleans did not contract with A&E. The City Commissioner claimed the shows had done their jobs and bettered community relations with EMS, and it was time to end the contract. See more
