Fed up with the amount of work at home, Joe Hawkins decides to buy a Synth, a human-like robot to help with the housework. His wife Laura is stuck out of town pleading a client's case and isn't too keen when she returns home to find the attractive robot, who they name Anita, in residence. Since the creation of these human-looking machines, they have taken over many of the menial tasks many would not wish to do. What only a very few people know is that their creator also made a very few sentient robots capable of emotions and independent thought. Several have escaped but Anita is one of those who has been captured and reprogrammed.
