Prince will be the subject of a new jukebox musical movie distributed by Universal Pictures, with Black Panther filmmaker Ryan Coolger set to produce.
The script was written by Bryan Edward Hill, who previously worked on television series Titans and Ash vs. Evil Dead.
The news was first reported by Jeff Sneider and confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.
Prince, who died in 2016, has a long cinematic history. 40 years ago this July, Warner Bros. distributed his classic film, Purple Rain. In recent years, he’s been a popular potential subject for projects, including an Elizabeth Banks-starring film that was hinted at in 2018 and an upcoming stage adaptation of Purple Rain.
As for additional details about the forthcoming jukebox musical — like casting, release date, and more — we’ll have to wait and see. If they haven’t nailed their leading actor yet, perhaps a scene akin to SNL’s 2021 Prince biopic skit is playing out now.

The first time I saw Samara Weaving on screen, she instantly made a major impression by fearlessly going to an 11 in Season 1 of Ash vs. Evil Dead. After that came Mayhem in which she and Steven Yeun fight their way through an office building royal rumble. She shines in The Babysitter as the leader of a devil-worshipping cult, she kicks all the you-know-what in the 2019 gem Ready or Not, and she plays the top-contender in a live-streamed death match in Guns Akimbo. Weaving’s filmography is loaded with variety, but when it comes to extreme action, she’s proven she can handle anything, and handle it exceptionally well. However, even with all that experience, Weaving admitted that her latest genre film demanded she level up.

Samara Weaving has earned modern scream queen status with roles in films like The Babysitter, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, Mayhem, Ready or Not, Scream VI, and the upcoming horror action movie Azrael, plus a few episodes of the Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series. Since Weaving has worked in both the Scream and Evil Dead franchises, she was asked during a new interview with Collider which horror franchise she would like to be a part of next. Her answer: Nightmare on Elm Street.
The filmmakers behind Azrael had originally wanted to cast Billie Eilish in the role Weaving ended up playing. So when she was asked the horror franchise question, she said, “Nightmare on Elm Street. I can do it. Unless Billie Eilish gets it now.“

A fan favorite here in the horror world, Samara Weaving has made her mark on the genre with films including Mayhem, The Babysitter and Ready or Not, and she’s also appeared in two iconic horror franchises to date with roles in both “Ash vs. Evil Dead” and Scream VI.
What franchise would Samara Weaving like to appear in next? It’s a question Collider asked the actress at SXSW over the weekend. Her answer? A Nightmare on Elm Street!

An Evil Dead reference in Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants has captured the attention of Bruce Campbell.
On X, Bruce Campbell shared a video that's been making the rounds on social media of the Evil Dead reference. From a recent episode of SpongeBob SquarePants, the clip features SpongeBob (Tom Kenny) entering a crowded Krusty Krab to tell his boss, Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown), that he's found the "cookbook" he was looking for. However, SpongeBob has inadvertently brought in the Necronomicon from the Evil Dead franchise instead. Along with addressing some of the spells from within its pages, the book's cover is also shown, and it looks just like the one from The Evil Dead. While sharing the video, Campbell joked, "Just don't say the words!"

One of the mandates laid out by actor Patrick Stewart prior to the shooting of "Star Trek: Picard" was that the new Trek series not be a reunion special. He didn't want to return to "Star Trek" after 15 years (his last appearance as Jean-Luc Picard was in "Star Trek: Nemesis" in 2002) just to participate in an insufferably teary series wherein the cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" tiresomely get back on the bridge of the Enterprise-d and re-do everything they had done on the celebrated 1987 series. By the time the third season of "Picard" rolled around, the series resoundingly broke that mandate.
In the show's first two seasons, however, the showrunners had to innovate. Picard was no longer a starship captain, and his closest allies were not an official Starfleet crew. Indeed, the main characters on "Picard" were all free agents, with most of them actively resentful of Starfleet.

Evil Dead Rise star Lily Sullivan has teased a possible return as Beth in the next Evil Dead installment.
Speaking with MovieWeb to promote her new horror movie Monolith, Sullivan was asked if she would be returning for the recently announced sixth movie in the Evil Dead franchise. "There's been lots of conversations happening. Jumping into the Evil Dead universe was obviously so much fun," she said. "And going from Evil Dead, full physical and absolutely pushing the boundaries in the physical sense, and then going full introspective and contained [with Monolith] and still creating the same level of chaos, I felt like Monolith was almost more exhausting, in a way. Horror and doing genre-based films, it's just so addictive because it's so much fun to exercise and entertain and push boundaries that you just don't get to do in real life. I'm just so about it and so about telling spooky stories.

In the build-up to the release of Evil Dead Rise (read our review right Here) last year, Evil Dead franchise rights holders Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert let it be known that they were already looking forward to producing more entries in the series, with Campbell revealing they were hoping to make a new sequel / spin-off every two or three years. It looks like they’re on track to do just that, as earlier this week it was announced that Sébastien Vaniček – who just made his feature directorial debut on the French horror film Vermin, a.k.a. Infested – has been hired to direct the next Evil Dead movie. Since Vermin happens to be nominated in two categories at this year’s César Awards, the website Konbini was able to catch up with Vaniček at a nominees’ dinner, and while talking with him they learned that he has...

Bruce Campbell's return as Ash Williams in the new Evil Dead spinoff seems unlikely due to a critical condition that will not be met. Campbell's one condition for returning as Ash was that Sam Raimi would have to direct the film, which is not the case for the upcoming sequel. The recent entries in the franchise have taken on a darker, horror-focused tone, making Ash's comedic character a poor fit for the direction the movies have taken.
Bruce Campbell's Ash Williams has been a mainstay of the Evil Dead franchise since its inception in 1981, but his return for the recently announced new entry in that universe seems unlikely due to one critical condition it will fail to meet. Here's something of a surprise: a new "Evil Dead" movie is on the way! After successfully relaunching the franchise with last year's nasty, gory "Evil Dead Rise," Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert's Ghost House Pictures have tapped up-and-coming filmmaker Sébastien Vaniček to helm what Deadline is describing as an "Evil Dead" spin-off film. I'm guessing they're calling it a "spin-off" rather than a sequel to imply that this new entry in the series will not connect to the recent "Evil Dead Rise." It's also unlikely to be a direct sequel to the original "Evil Dead" trilogy or the 2013 reboot.
In other words, it's time for a brand new story with brand new characters set in the "Evil Dead" world. I like this approach — you don't need connecting stories for an "Evil Dead" film. All you need is the basic set-up and you're free to run wild with it! Besides,...

The Evil Dead franchise is expansive, with several movies, a TV show, many comics, and other forms of media bearing the name. As such, it makes perfect sense for some of the installments to differ from others. That's especially the case with the spinoff series and movie requel.
Even though the first Evil Dead started as a low-budget idea by a group of college buddies, it was monumentally successful. The decades gave the Sam Raimi flick a reboot with 2013's Evil Dead, followed by a TV spinoff series with Ash vs. Evil Dead. Most recently, though, Evil Dead Rise dropped as the first Evil Dead movie in a decade. The show and the latest installment have many aspects connecting the two, but there are also many huge differences.

Bruce Campbell confirms that there are plans for more Evil Dead movies in the future, following the success of Evil Dead Rise. The filmmakers are given creative freedom to decide the tone and direction of each installment, whether it's a straight horror or a brighter-toned follow-up like Evil Dead 2. There are multiple potential paths for the franchise's future, including an animated revival of Ash vs. Evil Dead and a possible crossover between the 2013 rebootquel and the original trilogy.
Following the success of the most recent installment, Bruce Campbell has a very confident update for the Evil Dead franchise's future. Campbell was the face of Sam Raimi's horror franchise for three movies and the well-received TV show sequel, Ash vs. Evil Dead, starring as the Deadite-fighting protagonist Ash Williams before retiring the live-action version of the character. Outside of the Campbell-led installments, the franchise has seen success with 2013's soft...

Bruce Campbell has retired from playing Ash in the Evil Dead franchise but will continue to be involved as a producer. Campbell is entering a new phase of his career as a host and has already hosted shows like Ripley's Believe It or Not and a game show. Despite retiring Ash, Campbell plans to continue making movies and writing books, with a new movie scheduled to be made in Oregon.
Bruce Campbell has worked as an actor, producer, and even a director. Still, he's best known for playing the chainsaw wielding character, Ash Williams in the Sam Rami-created Evil Dead franchise.
Campbell first tackled the role of Ash with the 1981 film, The Evil Dead, before returning to reprise the character in the movie sequels, 1987's Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn and 1992's Army of Darkness. Campbell also played Ash for three seasons of the Starz series Ash vs. Evil Dead,...

If you're looking for a solid horror TV series, then you could do much worse than Ash vs Evil Dead. In terms of scares and ghouls, this mid-2010s series truly has it all. We're talking a spooky horror atmosphere, imaginative monsters, vile gore, impressive practical effects, a strong storyline, and a killer cast made up of Bruce Campbell, Dana DeLorenzo, and Ray Santiago. Beyond its horror-adjacent creative choices, Ash vs Evil Dead is also just flat-out funny. This series pushes the comedy harder than any other title in the Evil Dead franchise. For some fans, that might be a bit off-putting, but for those who just want a fun and sinister TV show that juggles creepy and comic, this is a must-see. Don't just take my word for it, either. This is the highest-rated horror series on Rotten Tomatoes. Even if you aren't a fan of that site, landing...

How the heck do you rank the "Evil Dead" movies?
No horror franchise has taken bigger swings, with entries ranging from brutal, unrelenting horror to straight-up goofball slapstick. No horror franchise has proven more consistent in its inconsistency, with each entry showcasing an anarchic streak a mile wide. If an "Evil Dead" movie isn't trying to startle you out of your skin with transgressive intensity, it's trying to make you giggle like a loon. And sometimes, it tries to make you giggle like a loon using that transgressive intensity. Director Sam Raimi made it clear with his original three movies that there are no hard and fast rules in this universe -- and other filmmakers have gleefully stepped in and followed suit. The only thing that truly defines an "Evil Dead" movie is that it needs to be extreme in one way or another.

The fluid nature of the entertainment sector ensures that the horror genre remains ever-evolving. Within this genre, audience preferences shift, as new shows introduce trends and captivate viewers, while interest in others wanes. A case in point is the burgeoning popularity of horror-comedy shows.

By now, most people are familiar with popular TV shows like American Horror Story, Stranger Things, and The Haunting of Hill House. These series pave the way for brilliant storytelling in small-screen horror. However, several horror shows don't have the same popularity as the ones mentioned before.
Compared to more famous series, some horror shows live in the shadows, causing viewers to forget about them. From post-apocalyptic tales like Z Nation and The Strain to hidden gems like Evil, these horror shows are severely underrated.

TV adaptations of popular movies have become hit-or-miss, but Fox's The Exorcist was a great example of converting a well-known horror property for the small screen. As a direct continuation of the original film that ignores the previous sequels, the series followed Fathers Tomas Ortega and Marcus Keane as they investigate different cases of demonic possession each season.

The Evil Dead franchise features multiple versions of the Necronomicon, each with its own distinct appearance and abilities, leading to inconsistencies in the movie timeline. The Necronomicon Ex-Mortis is the original book that unleashes evil forces and possesses living vessels. It has a recognizable face on its cover and becomes more refined over time. Each film in the franchise introduces a new Necronomicon, with Evil Dead Rise featuring a version that causes possessed individuals to torture rather than quickly dispose of their victims. The future of the series is assured with the possibility of a fourth volume.
Sam Raimi's Evil Dead introduced the world to the Necronomicon, the Book of the Dead responsible for unleashing an indefatigable force of darkness upon a group of clueless campers, but the third film in the franchise, Army of Darkness, mentioned three different versions when de facto hero Ash traveled back in time to find evil's source,...

After several movies displayed just how unpredictable the vicious Deadites can be when torturing their victims, one Evil Dead Rise line finally revealed what their motivation is. With few exceptions, the living victims of Deadites eventually die in gruesome fashion, and it's fairly clear that they have the ability to kill their victims whenever they want. But the defining characteristic of a Deadite possession is not the eventual outcome, it's the insane behavior of the possessed individuals while under the influence of the Deadites.
As the Evil Dead franchise has evolved, the Deadite behavior has ranged from almost silly to extremely disturbing, but the common thread is their completely unpredictable nature. There is no textbook Deadite possession, and each instance reveals new and twisted ways that the Deadites can morph flesh, spread their infection and torment the people closest to the victim. The true intention of the Deadites' behavior was...

For a brief window of time, it seemed as if Sam Raimi's Evil Dead franchise was destined to rise from its grave. The early to mid-2010s saw the hysterical horror series return with 2013's Evil Dead, a half-and-half reboot that loosely followed the events of the original series with a brand-new cast. It was more reminiscent of the first Evil Dead than Army of Darkness, embracing the "evil" of Evil Dead through its grim tone and painful violence. A second installment, however, would return to the franchise's sillier side with a full-blown series, along with bringing back the bona fide face of Evil Dead as a whole.

Watching the Evil Dead movies in order can be confusing due to the franchise's convoluted timeline, with the original series, a soft reboot, a spin-off TV show, and the 2023 Evil Dead Rise film all being canon. Army of Darkness is a crucial part of the timeline, taking Ash to the Middle Ages and introducing bizarre elements like an evil doppelgänger and an army of Deadites. Evil Dead Rise brings the franchise into the modern day and revitalizes it, featuring new characters and possibly hinting at more time travel and a return of Ash.

Evil Dead 6 needs a new character to replace Ash Williams, and the best candidate is Brandy Barr, Ash's long-lost daughter introduced in Ash vs Evil Dead season She is a clever and motivated high school senior who could become a badass deadite-slaying hero. Brandy's role would continue the franchise's focus on strong female leads, following in the footsteps of characters like Mia Allen and Beth. This would add to the franchise's appeal and create a pantheon of badass deadite-slaying women. There are various ways to bring Brandy into Evil Dead 6, such as searching for her missing father, coming into possession of the Necronomicons, or investigating one of the cabins. The possibilities for a Brandy-centric storyline are limitless.
