- To avoid rivalry among pandavas, they had come to a decision to have Draupadi divide her time equally between the five brothers. Once while helping a Brahmin, Arjun had to violate the rule and had to go on a pilgrimage.
- Krishna proposes marriage as a tool to increase political alliances. Kunti understands this as a necessity and agrees with the plan. Arjun is chosen to go on a "tour", so that this does not raise any suspicions in Hastinapur. Krishna wanted Arjun to continue amassing divya weapons and allies. He wanted Arjun to go on a tour for the same.
The Pandavas were happy in Indraprastha. To avoid rivalry amongst themselves, they had come to a decision to have Draupadi divide her time equally between the five brothers. When she was alone with one of them and if any other should intrude on their privacy, he must go on a pilgrimage to do penance. Once while helping a Brahmin, Arjun had to violate the rule (and enter Draupadi's chambers while she was with someone else) and had to go on a pilgrimage. Arjun visited Naglok and Molur, and there he married Ullipi and Chitrangada. He then moved towards Dwarka.
When Shakuni finds that Arjun has left Indraprastha for a penance tour, he is alarmed. As Arjun is doing marriages to build allies. Shakuni knows that the Pandavas are surrounding the Kauravas and their allies. Shakuni is able to sense Arjun's real purpose of the pilgrimage (he surmises that Arjun is headed to Dwarka) and advises Duryodhan to cement his relations with Dwarka by asking for Subhadra's hand in marriage. Shakuni says that these political marriages have no escape path and he knows that would be the only way control Krishna. Duryodhan asks Balram for his sister Subhadra's hand in marriage (after Balram gives him a boon when Duryodhan defeats Balram in mace battle, and declares him to be the best mace warrior in the entire world) and Balram promised to plead his case with his parents. Meanwhile, Arjun reaches Dwarka and he fell in love with Subhadra. And, Subhadra reciprocated his love. Krishna is also in Dwarka and blesses their union.
Balram reaches Dwarika and argues Duryodhan's case in front of Vasudev and Devki. Devki is worried that marrying Subhadra to Duryodhan will not be appreciated by Kunti. Vasudev knows that the partition of the kingdom will only sow the seeds future discords. They are almost convinced when Balram says that he gave his word to Duryodhan. Before any decision could be made, Krishna says that let the decision be made with the rising sun on the following day. Krishna helps Arjun to elope with Subhadra. He tells Arjun to leave for the temple at sunrise where Subhadra will meet him (he had told Subhadra to go to the temple at sunrise if she doesn't want to marry Duryodhan. He tells Subhadra that Arjun will elope with her is she goes to the temple). And he tells Arjun to let Subhadra drive his chariot. He also tells Arjun that Draupadi came from fire and to make every attempt that Subhadra's presence does not offend Draupadi at any cost. Draupadi is the wife of all 5 brothers, but only Arjun won her swayamvar.
Balram is furious and wants to send his army to capture Arjun, but Krishna convinces him that Subhadra had gone with Arjun on her own accord (he insists that Subhadra told him that she didn't want to marry Duryodhan). She was the one driving Arjun's chariot and not the other way around. Krishna admonishes Balram that a daughter or a sister is not an object that can given away as an award. Subhadra has the right to chose her husband. Balram orders that Arjun be brought back to Dwarka with honor as he is now the son-in-law of the Kingdom.
