Thanos presumptuously believed that everyone would be grateful that he "saved the universe", which is made clear when he tell the Avengers that they "should be grateful" that he murdered trillions. Perhaps he expected everyone to express their gratitude by cutting down on reproduction in order to maintain balance. See more »
