Meanwhile, Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) meets up with Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) and sorcerers Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Wong (Benedict Wong). With help from Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), Stark and Strange join forces together and agree to stop Thanos. In space, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) also joins forces with the Guardians of the Galaxy, Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Groot (Vin Diesel), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), and Gamora (Zoe Saldana), the daughter of Thanos who warns Thor of his power. - Having acquired the Power Stone from the planet Xandar, Thanos (Josh Brolin) (An intergalactic despot from Titan who longs to collect all six of the Infinity Stones in order to impose his will on all of reality, wanting to "re-balance the universe) and his lieutenants-Ebony Maw (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor), Cull Obsidian (Terry Notary), Proxima Midnight (Carrie Coon), and Corvus Glaive (Michael James Shaw)-intercept the spaceship carrying the survivors of Asgard's destruction. Thanos destroys the ship and kills all surviving Asgardians.
As they extract the Space Stone from the Tesseract (surrendered by Loki after Thor and Hulk are defeated by Thanos in battle), Thanos subdues Thor (Chris Hemsworth), overpowers Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and kills Loki (Tom Hiddleston). With the power stone, even Hulk is no match for Thanos and is cowered into submission. Heimdall (Idris Elba) sends Hulk to Earth using the Bifrost before being killed. Thanos departs with his lieutenants and obliterates the spaceship. He instructs Maw & his lackeys to retrieve 2 infinity stones from Earth (Time stone with Dr Strange and Mind Stone with Vision) and meet him on Titan. Thanos's lieutenants duly arrive on Earth in their massive spaceship.
Hulk crash-lands at the Sanctum Sanctorum in New York City, reverting to Bruce Banner. He warns Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Wong (Benedict Wong) about Thanos' plan to kill half of all life in the universe. In response, Strange recruits Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). Thor used to attack each planet one by one, killing half their population, but found that the process was too slow and the problem too big. He knew that the Infinity Stones would give him the power to reshape the Universe itself and save life from itself. The attack on New York was carried out by Thanos.
The Big Bang created 6 elemental crystals, each of which controlled an essential aspect of existence which are: time, space, reality, mind, power, and soul. He already has the power and space stones. Wong tells everyone that with the 6 infinity stones in his possession, Thanos can control the universe itself by simply snapping his fingers.
Vision has the mind stone, but he has turned off his tracker. Only Rogers can find Vision and he and Tony haven't spoken since the Avengers broke up. Hulk tells Tony to bury his differences with Captain America (Chris Evans), since Thanos is coming to Earth, no matter whether they are talking or not. Maw and Obsidian arrive to retrieve the Time Stone from Strange, drawing the attention of Peter Parker (Tom Holland). Bruce is unable to convert into Hulk. Maw captures Strange but fails to take the Time Stone due to an enchantment around the stone. Stark and Parker pursue Maw's spaceship, Banner contacts Steve Rogers, and Wong stays behind to guard the Sanctum.
On the spaceship Parker and Stark defeat Maw by blasting a part of the ship's hull and sucking Maw into open space. Dr Strange is worried about the Time Stone falling into Thanos's hands and wants to turn around the spaceship. But Stark thinks that the best way to defeat Thanos is by engaging him away from the Earth. The spaceship is on auto-pilot and Stark reckons that it will take them where Thanos is or is going to be. So, they agree to pursue Thanos, but Dr Strange warns Stark that he would sacrifice him and Parker both, if that would protect the time stone. The trio crash land on Titan.
In Scotland, Midnight and Glaive ambush Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) in order to retrieve the Mind Stone in Vision's forehead. Rogers, Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), and Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) rescue them and take shelter with James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) and Banner at the Avengers Compound. Vision offers to sacrifice himself by having Maximoff destroy the Mind Stone to keep Thanos from retrieving it. Rogers suggests they travel to Wakanda, which he believes has the resources to remove the stone without destroying Vision.
The Guardians of the Galaxy respond to a distress call from the Asgardian ship and rescue Thor who was floating frozen in deep space. Thor learns that Gamora (Zoe Saldana) is Thanos's daughter and that he is linked romantically to Quill (Chris Pratt). Thor surmises Thanos seeks the Reality Stone, which is in the possession of the Collector (Benicio Del Toro) on Knowhere. Gamora wants to go to Knowhere to stop Thanos, but Thor wants to go to Nidavellir (the dying star where the Hammer Mjolnir was also cast) to cast a Thanos killing weapon. Undecided, they split into 2 teams. Gamora remembers how Thanos attacked her planet and killed exactly half the population. He adopted Gamora, after he found her standing up to him. Thanos gifts her a perfectly balanced knife. Gamora makes Quill promise her that if Thanos captures her that he will kill her.
Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel) accompany Thor to Nidavellir (on the way Thor tells his story to Rocket, who gives Thor an artificial eye for the one he lost). Thor also finds that this is where Thanos forged his gauntlet and after that he killed everybody who worked at Nidavellir and killed the star, and also cut off Eitri's hands while sparing his life. Thor, Rocket and Eitri (Peter Dinklage) create a battle-ax (The Stormbreaker) capable of killing Thanos. Thor kick starts the star to power the furnaces and Groot provides the handle to lift the ax. The Stormbreaker can also act as a Bifrost.
On Knowhere, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista) (A member of the Guardians and warrior in search of vengeance against Thanos for killing his family), and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) find Thanos with the Reality Stone already in his possession. Thanos uses the stone to twist reality and tricks Gamora into thinking that she attacked and killed him.
But in reality, Thanos kidnaps Gamora, his adoptive daughter. Quill is unable to kill Gamora as he hesitates and by then Thanos changes reality again. On his ship, Thanos argues that ever since he eliminated half the population on Gamora's planet, the children have experienced full bellies and clean skies. The Universe has finite resources and life, if left unchecked, will consume itself. Thanos insists that he is the only one who understands this and will do what is needed to save the Universe. Gamora reveals the location of the Soul Stone to save her captive adoptive sister Nebula (Karen Gillan) from torture. Nebula was captured when she came aboard Thanos's ship to kill him. Thanos and Gamora travel to Vormir, where Red Skull (the original Skeletor villain from the first Captain America movie), keeper of the Soul Stone, informs him the stone can only be retrieved by sacrificing someone he loves. Thanos reluctantly kills Gamora, earning the stone.
Nebula escapes captivity and asks the remaining Guardians to meet her on Thanos' destroyed home world, Titan. Stark and Parker and Strange, Land on Titan, they meet Quill, Drax, and Mantis. The group forms a plan to remove Thanos' Infinity Gauntlet after Strange uses the Time Stone to view millions of possible futures, seeing only one in which Thanos loses.
Thanos arrives, justifying his plans as necessary to ensure the survival of a universe threatened by overpopulation. The group subdues him until Nebula deduces that Thanos has killed Gamora. Enraged, Quill attacks him, allowing Thanos to break the group's hold and overpower them. Stark is seriously wounded by Thanos but is spared after Strange surrenders the Time Stone to Thanos. Strange reveals that this was the only way.
In Wakanda, Rogers reunites with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) before Thanos' army invades. The Avengers, alongside T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and the Wakandan forces, mount a defense against Thanos's army (the same that attacked New York) while Shuri (Letitia Wright), T'Challa's sister works to extract the Mind Stone from Vision. Banner, unable to transform into the Hulk, fights in Stark's Hulkbuster armor. Thor, Rocket, and Groot arrive via the Bifrost to reinforce the Avengers; Midnight, Obsidian, and Glaive are killed, and their army is routed. Thanos arrives and swiftly changes the course of battle in his favor and despite Maximoff's attempt to destroy the Mind Stone, removes it from Vision, killing him.
Thor severely wounds Thanos, but Thanos activates the completed Infinity Gauntlet and Teleports away. Half of all life across the universe disintegrates, including Barnes, T'Challa, Groot, Maximoff, Wilson, Mantis, Drax, Quill, Strange, and Parker. Stark and Nebula remain on Titan while Banner, M'Baku, Okoye, Rhodes, Rocket, Rogers, Romanoff, and Thor are left on the Wakandan battlefield. Meanwhile, Thanos watches a sunrise on another planet. In a post-credits scene, Nick Fury transmits a signal as he, Maria Hill, and others disintegrate. The transmitter displays a starburst insignia on a red-and-blue background.
