When the characters first take the the modified plane into outer space, they immediately become weightless and start floating once they leave Earth's atmosphere.
Earth's gravity is not created by the atmosphere, but by the mass of Earth itself. (The moon is still caught in Earth's gravitational pull.)
Secondly, the plane is shown to still be accelerating away from Earth, which would have, at the least, pushed them back in their seats.
In simple terms, weightlessness in space is caused by continually falling back toward the surface (due to gravity) but moving fast enough sideways to avoid hitting the Earth. See more »

There are zero stakes in this film, which makes it hard to care much about the fate of its characters. Too bad because they had ten bazillion dollars and all the good-will in the world with which to make this movie.
