Storyline

The coywolf, a mixture of western coyote and eastern wolf, is a remarkable new hybrid carnivore that is taking over territories once roamed by wolves and slipping unnoticed into our cities. Its appearance is very recent - within the last 90 years - in evolutionary terms, a blip in time. Beginning in Canada but by no means ending there, the story of how it came to be is an extraordinary tale of how quickly adaptation and evolution can occur, especially when humans interfere. Tag along as scientists study this new top predator, tracking it from the wilderness of Ontario's Algonquin Park, through parking lots, alleys and backyards in Toronto all the way to the streets of New York City. More hard information than most in the Nature series.
10 May 2015 | by carbuffSee all my reviews

Given that I have a formal education in biology and continue to keep up with related subject matter, I find these PBS Nature series typically a bit light on hard information for my tastes; however, this particular one is better than most in that respect and is a bit faster moving to boot.

In addition, it deals with an example of evolution in action that most people are unaware of, so it is worthwhile watch for that reason alone.

Thus, overall this Nature episode is better than most in this series, and, after all, how many people (other than those who suffer significant economic losses at their teeth) can really resist a glimpse into the life of animals so similar to our domesticated canine buddies anyhow? Not me.
