- Vera investigates the death of an unidentified man dredged up from a slurry pit on a remote Northumberland farm.
- Farmer Danny Pryor discovers the corpse of young Jack Reeves in his slurry tank. Danny employs Kosovans, one of whom has also recently died in suspicious circumstances but Vera discovers that Jack was a traveller, who had left his camp after a row with his parents. The travellers had been in a land dispute with Danny, whose publican brother had also barred Jack after a fight and, to complicate matters, Jack had broken off his engagement to another traveller, Sigourney - much to her father's anger - because he was gay. Vera locates Jack's camper van, containing a wad of notes, suggesting he was involved in something illegal, possibly with the Kosovans. However it is Danny's little boy, the profoundly deaf Toby, who gives Vera the means to solve the case.—don @ minifie-1
- DCI Vera Stanhope and her team investigate the death of a young man who was found in farmer Danny Prior's slurry pit. The body was weighted down but the pathologist determines that he was strangled and so was dead before he was dumped in the slurry. It also appears that he had a tattoo removed. Vera initially focuses on Goran Vlasic, a Kosovoan who works on the Pryors farm and whose name was once mentioned in a gunrunning case. When another migrant farm worker is killed, Vera is convinced the farm is the focus of the investigation. The case goes in a different direction when the police determine that the tattoo removed from the dead man's arm was Romani in origin He is identified by the head of the local travelers as Jack Reeves. The travelers had a run-in with Prior some years ago but it's the Priors young son Toby who provides the vital clue that leads to solving the case.—garykmcd
