Sex & Nudity

  • An erect penis is very briefly shown (prosthetic, shown sporadically during the scene for no more than three seconds in total). Not shown vividly; you might not even notice it.
  • A woman shows her breasts to her husband over a Skype video call. However, due to camera angles and lighting, nothing is fully shown to the audience.
  • A woman masturbates over a Skype video call (heavily implied). Her breasts can be seen extremely briefly (blink and you'll miss it). Her husband is shown to be aroused, and puts his hand underneath his blanket, implying masturbation as well.
  • A woman is seen showering; her husband comes in clothed and they kiss. The scene then cuts to a very far away shot of the husband seemingly having sex with his wife (only their silhouettes are seen in this shot, as it's seen through the shower door). No graphic nudity.
  • A man and woman have a very loud, grunting sex on their office desk. They are fully clothed and no nudity is shown. Very brief and done in a comedic way.
  • A woman is shown showering; buttocks and side breast briefly visible.
  • A main plotline of the series is of a woman coming to terms with a sexual assault she experienced, resulting in a pregnancy. Throughout the first season, very brief glimpses of that night are shown. Nothing too graphic is seen, and due to the editing techniques used, it's difficult to fully see what's going on.
  • Apart from Celeste's (Nicole Kidman) storyline, sexual content is kept low. Some sex related talk, implied sex, etc, but nothing very inappropriate.
  • A woman is having an affair; they are seen kissing.

Violence & Gore

  • There are multiple scenes of domestic abuse, ranging in intensity, in multiple episodes.
  • A woman imagines herself shooting the man that assaulted her; a small spurt of blood is seen as she "shoots" him.
  • A woman throws up at a dinner; some of it goes onto another person.

Profanity

  • Frequent but sparse uses of f--k, s--t, bitch, damn, hell, etc.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A man smokes in one scene. It is however brief and not much is seen.
  • Episode 1: A brief reference to marijuana. A woman is seen beginning to light a cigarette.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Rated TV-MA for some strong sexual content, nudity, language and violence.
  • Canadian Rating: Rated 14A for Course Language, Sexual Content and Nudity
