Is 2024 the year of tennis? At the movies and on our TV screens, the answer might be yes. This spring brings two major releases that both heavily feature racquets, green courts, and sweaty tennis action. The first was Peacock’s “Apples Never Fall,” a limited series based on “Big Little Lies” scribe Liane Moriarty’s novel about the family of two married tennis pros (played by Annette Bening and Sam Neill) who are forced to contend with the mysterious and sudden disappearance of their matriarch. Even more anticipated is “Challengers,” a Luca Guadagnino film that arrives — after strike-related delays — this April to tell the steamy story of a tennis coach (Zendaya) caught between her husband and an old flame as the two men go head to head in a Challenger tennis event.
These two releases mark the biggest Spring for tennis-related media in…possibly ever. Which isn’t necessarily hard...

“I don’t want to distract from the story, as my purpose is always to support the characters. But because we are showing Hong Kong a lot, I also wanted to make sure I show Hong Kong in the right perspective” explains production designer Yong Ok Lee about designing the sets for Amazon Prime Video’s limited series “Expats.” For our recent webchat the Korean-American designer adds, “I’m not Cantonese. I don’t know their culture,” noting that she “researched a lot of the background about Hong Kong politics, society and economy, but also I wanted to make sure that I can balance between an expat and a local perspective, because it’s not all about Hong Kong locals, it’s also about expats from their perspective.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

We don't have to wonder if The Sympathizer will be cancelled or renewed for a second season since it's been promoted as a limited series. Still, HBO sometimes likes to change course and find a way to keep shows going. Big Little Lies and The White Lotus are good examples. Could The Sympathizer continue beyond these seven episodes? Stay tuned.

Good news for 12-year-old kids who talk about Deadpool as if he’s Jean-Luc Godard, think calling someone a “fuck puppet” is the height of comedy, and just can’t wait until July for another noxiously self-aware cartoon bloodbath about a disfigured anti-hero who dresses in red and simply refuses to shut up: “Boy Kills World” is here, and while it may be a touch less meta than the Merc with a Mouth’s forthcoming installment of the MCU, it does co-star Brett Gelman as a loathsome shitheel whose frustrated creative ambitions have compelled him to endorse child murder, so that’s something.
Another point in its favor: The film’s hyper-logorrheic protagonist doesn’t actually talk, on account of the fact that his tongue was sliced off when he was a child. “Boy” communicates to us instead through the magic of his internal monologue, for which he permanently assigned...

FX’s adaptation of James Clavell’s doorstop of a novel, Shōgun, met — and for some, surely surpassed — any expectations, given its stellar cast and high-level production values.
The 10-episode series, which also streamed on Hulu and wrapped on April 23, covered the beginning, middle and end, and many key moments in between, of the 1,200-page novel that Clavell first published in 1975, building to a finale that was beautiful, poetic and largely satisfying.

Actor Zoe Kravitz makes her directorial debut with psychological thriller Blink Twice, and here’s the trailer.
Actor Zoe Kravitz has turned filmmaker, having teamed up with Et Feigenbaum for Blink Twice, her directorial debut which initially went under the title Pussy Island. It hasn’t been confirmed exactly what prompted the name change, but we didn’t spot any cats in the trailer.
Anyway, the synopsis reads as follows:
When tech billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum) meets cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) at his fundraising gala, sparks fly. He invites her to join him and his friends on a dream vacation on his private island. It’s paradise. Wild nights blend into sun soaked days and everyone’s having a great time. No one wants this trip to end, but as strange things start to happen, Frida begins to question her reality. There is something wrong with this place.

Peacock’s new limited series “Apples Never Fall” is cut from the same cloth as “Big Little Lies,” with both shows adapted from the novels of Australian author Liane Moriarty.
“Apples Never Fall” follows a family, led by four adult children, trying to piece together the mysterious disappearance of their mother Joy (Oscar-nominee Annette Bening). Bening is reliably excellent in this limited series, as is “Jurassic Park” star Sam Neil, who plays her on-screen husband. And Jake Lacy and Allison Brie shine as two of the four adult kids. All four performances have been praised by critics and its these turns that could lead the Emmy charge for the series.
Brian Lowry (CNN) stated: “As for the old expression ‘How do you like them apples?,’ in this case, happily, the answer is quite a lot.”
Matthew Gilbert (Boston Globe) opined: “If the ending to the mystery is predictable, the getting...

Another legal drama is coming to our screens this summer, and this time, Jake Gyllenhaal is taking the lead.
While there's no shortage of legal and crime dramas, we certainly aren't going to complain about another series joining the roster.
As far as Apple TV+'s Presumed Innocent goes, we're excited to see what this drama will bring us this summer.
Presumed Innocent Plot
Presumed Innocent follows Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal) as his life is turned upside down.
A promising Chicago prosecutor, he quickly finds himself on the other side of the legal system when he becomes the prime suspect in a case revolving around the murder of someone in his office.

Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 5 was supposedly going to turn it all around for the superhero universe. After a failed attempt with Phase 4, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was a promising candidate when it came to reviving the MCU. Starring Paul Rudd, Jonathan Majors, and Kathryn Newton, the film unfortunately failed to live up to the fans’ expectations.
Kathryn Newton as Cassie Lang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
In a recent interview, Kathryn Newton revealed that filming for Ant-Man 3 was the easiest job of her life. Looking at the response her comments have received, it is clear that fans are still upset about the awful sequel, especially her performance, and are not going to let her live it down.
Kathryn Newton’s Comments about Ant-Man 3 Backfire
Kathryn Newton as Sammy in Abigail
Kathryn Newton’s latest film, Abigail, has just hit the theatres and has received positive reviews from the critics.

The lasting confrontation of the book lovers and the cinephiles doesn’t seem to come to a conclusion. However, some series based on the novels and on the games are known for objectively better elaboration of the source’s events and character development.
Here are 7 TV titles which surpass the material they were adapted from.
The Boys (2019 – …)
The live-action adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s superhero comic book series appears to be more relevant and worth a try as it adds a razor-sharp social commentary to the initial plot, also improving the development of the main characters.
Dexter (2006-2013)
Based on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, this crime series is more recognized by its creative screenwriting decisions, including the more intricate description of the serial killer’s personal life and ways of performing the crimes.

2022 was the year that Apple TV+'s billions of dollars spent on content began to bear fruit, with several successful releases premiering on the small screen – we got the sci-fi Severance, the spy thriller Slow Horses, and the crime show Black Bird.
Unsurprisingly, Sharon Horgan's Irish comedy thriller Bad Sisters, which has a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, did not have its moment of glory as it was overshadowed by bigger releases. And it’s time to get acquainted with this Apple TV hidden masterpiece.
What is Bad Sisters About?
The dark comedy tells the story of five sisters from picturesque Ireland who banded together after the death of their parents, always supporting each other. The union falls apart when one of them marries and becomes a sad and helpless housewife whose husband forbids her to be herself.

HBO’s Succession became the network’s new Game of Thrones: the same political schemes and backstabbing of the people rich and powerful beyond others’ imagination, but set in modern-day New York instead of medieval Westeros.
But everyone wants a piece of that high-stakes big-money success, so Netflix has been working hard to create its own Succession. From what we see, they’ve succeeded!
A Man in Full Breaks the Wheel
Most TV shows about the rich and powerful in the United States are set in New York; it’s something of a law at this point. But Netflix breaks the everlasting cycle of aerial Manhattan shots in its upcoming limited series A Man in Full: unlike Succession and other like-minded shows, it will take us to Atlanta, Georgia. Awkwafina rose to fame with her idiosyncratic, trademark comedic stylings. Then she wowed us all with her against-type performance in Lulu Wang‘s “The Farewell,” which very nearly earned her an Oscar nomination back in 2019. She delivers another quiet, subdued role in the Hulu telefilm “Quiz Lady,” which could well reap her a career-first Emmy bid for acting.
Awkwafina plays the reserved Anne, who must compete on the game show she is obsessed with alongside her loud, abrasive, estranged sister Jenny (Sandra Oh) in order to pay off their mom’s gambling debts. The result is a heartwarming comedy that is one of the sweet treats of the year. Critics loved the movie and singled out Awkafina for particular praise.

Splashy and flashy (but not really trashy), Palm Royale on Apple TV+ fits easily into the ranks of high-gloss, high-concept, female-driven dramas that have enjoyed a Golden Age on premium streaming channels this past decade.
Recent series like Bad Sisters (also on Apple TV+) and Max's Big Little Lies drew a substantial audience with a combination of star-studded ensemble casts, heavy themes, and plots from best-selling domestic thrillers like those written by author Liane Moriarty.
Palm Royale ticks many of those boxes (it's based on the 2018 novel Mr. and Mrs. American Pie by Juliet McDaniel), but instead of sexual violence and trauma, it brings big laughs and a soapy jewel-box mystery to the female-centric limited series tablescape.
Palm Royale's opening credit sequence immediately places the series in time and taste by evoking Valley of The Dolls and James Bond with its graphic animation.

Emma Stone became the lucky 13th two-time Best Actress Oscar champ with her recent win for “Poor Things.” And she could well be adding an Emmy to her awards collection for her leading role in Showtime’s idiosyncratic drama series “The Curse.”
“The Curse,” created by Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, follows a newly married couple (Stone and Fielder) who host an HGTV show while trying to conceive a baby and navigate a curse. Sure the series is rich in cringe comedy that is hard to tear your eyes from even if you watch through your fingers. But it is also intelligent, dark and surprisingly moving. At the heart of it all is Stone, who delivers yet another tour de force, as noted by critics.
Joel Golby (The Guardian) proclaimed: “Emma Stone is in there, continuing to be our generation’s finest mouth actor – she really can show a whole...

Brie Larson won the Oscar for Best Actress for “Room” in 2016. Since then she has worked primarily in major franchises — appearing in “Avengers: Endgame” and a handful of other MCU projects as Captain Marvel and in the “Fast and Furious” film series. The actress hasn’t really found a project to show the talent she displayed in her tour de force performance in “Room” until now.
She stars in “Lessons in Chemistry,” the Apple TV+ show based on the novel of the same name by Bonnie Garmus. It follows Larson as Elizabeth Zott, a lab tech and chemist who uses her new job hosting a 1960s TV cooking show to educate housewives on scientific topics. The result is an entertaining period story in which Larson utilizes her distinct energy and impressive range to full effect. Larson injects Elizabeth with intelligence and heart but also zip, determination, and frustration in a well-rounded performance.

Produced by the legendary Sam Raimi, the film marks the feature directorial debut of Moritz Mohr. It was scripted by Arend Remmers (Sløborn) and Tyler Burton Smith (Kung Fury: The Movie). The story takes place in a bizarre, dark dystopian universe and centers on a deaf and mute character, Boy (Skarsgård), who navigates this depressing world with his otherworldly imagination.

Nicole Kidman is one of Hollywood’s biggest celebrities, and her marriage to Tom Cruise was sensational, to say the least. The two of them enjoyed a whirlwind romance before they tied the knot. However, their marriage fell apart after being together for 11 years.
Their divorce was painful, and Kidman was particularly affected by it. It has been decades, and both of them have moved on since, but the Big Little Lies actress opened up about the turbulent time that followed their split.

Jodie Foster is having a good year. The two-time Oscar winner returned to the attention of the academy for the first time since 1995 with a nomination for “Nyad.” Now, she and showrunner Issa López have revamped HBO’s flagging “True Detective” with the best entry since the show’s first season.
“True Detective: Night Country” stars Foster as an acid-tongue, spiky police chief who is tasked with investigating the disappearance of eight men in the spooky, fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. Playing a detective will naturally harken viewers’ minds back to her turn as Clarice Starling in “The Silence of the Lambs,” the film for which she won her second Best Actress Oscar (“The Accused” being the other). It’s her meatiest role in years and Foster devours it.
Brian Tallerico (Roger Ebert) observed: “Our unsteady guiding hand through this darkness is Liz Danvers, played with icy perfection by Jodie Foster.

Apple TV+ has recruited a perfect pairing for its Imperfect Women adaptation, tapping Elisabeth Moss and Kerry Washington to star in the forthcoming limited series based on Araminta Hall’s novel.

Released in 2004, Jonathan Glazer’s second feature Birth refused to spoon-feed answers to the audience, which might’ve unfortunately added to its box-office failure at the time. However, decades later, the highly polarizing film, which saw Nicole Kidman delivering her best performance since Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, continues to resonate with fans.
While the visionary director was initially conflicted about starring Kidman, following her celebrity stature, it didn’t take long for the filmmaker to be convinced she was ready for the role. Reflecting on her character, Glazer revealed that they initially talked about de-s-xualizing Kidman’s image, but at the end of the day, he couldn’t differentiate her from herself.

Few limited series captivated 2010s audiences more than “Big Little Lies.” David E. “Mary & George” is the delicious new historical drama from British playwright D.C. Moore, who swaps out stuffy history lessons for a raucous, bawdy ride that fans of “The Favourite” will love. Like that Oscar-winning movie, this limited series on Starz focuses on an era of British royalty that is little-known to American audiences.
Julianne Moore plays the Countess of Buckingham, who groomed her son (Nicholas Galitzine) to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) in an attempt to curry favor, power, titles, and riches in 1600s England. In the titular role of Mary, Moore delivers another powerhouse performance. She owns every scene she’s in and proves once more why she is one of the best actresses working today. Critics agree, “Mary & George” is the Moore show.

Structurally, it was a brilliant conceit having six of the seven episodes of the “Apples Never Fall” limited series (currently streaming on Peacock) revolve around a different family member in this twisted jigsaw puzzle of a mystery. Score one for showrunner Melanie Marnich, who had a lot of bitter-tasting family dynamics to work with in adapting Liane Moriarty’s (“Big Little Lies”) page-turner novel. It’s about the tennis-obsessed Delaneys, who unravel when matriarch Joy (Annette Bening) suddenly disappears and hot-tempered patriarch Stan (Sam Neill) becomes the prime suspect in what eventually becomes a murder investigation.
As a result, their four adult children — Troy (Jake Lacy), Amy (Alison Brie), Logan (Conor Merrigan-Turner), and Brooke (Essie Randles) — are forced to confront their dysfunctional upbringing, competitive natures, and toxic relationships in realizing that they function more like a South Florida cult than a loving family.

Apple TV+’s Palm Royale kicks off with the kind of leading image that many a contemporary dramedy billing itself as part murder mystery has used: a body floating in the water, presumably on the verge of death, and the audience — and characters — wondering exactly how we got where we are. It’s a cliche at this point, in a world where The White Lotus and Big Little Lies have managed to semi-legitimize the kind of narrative that would once have been relegated to both daytime and primetime soap operas. And yet it persists, much like the protagonist of Palm Royale, desperate to become someone in a world where she’s treated as no one.

Nicole Kidman is opening up about why she and Reese Witherspoon feel now is the time for Big Little Lies season three.
In an interview with Elle, the multi-award-winning actress confirmed that she and her co-star and fellow executive producer have been discussing where they want their stories to go in a possible third season. She also explained why time away from the show was important.
“There’s the richness of the storylines, which we’d always discussed, but it needed time because there’s actual unbelievable depth to the next chapter of these women’s lives and their children’s lives — because children grow up, and that’s kind of fascinating,” Kidman told the publication.
Sources familiar with the series told The Hollywood Reporter in January that Witherspoon and Kidman have an idea they are both excited about for season three and were working to put together a formal pitch for HBO.

Nicole Kidman said in a recent interview with Elle magazine that her daughter, Sunday Rose, was partly responsible for getting “Big Little Lies” Season 3 off the ground. She demanded another season after finishing Season 2 and even had some criticisms to share about her mother’s character arc.
“My daughter is the one who watched both of the series and went, ‘Okay, there’s just no question, there has to be a third,’” Kidman said, adding that Sunday gave her notes on character development. “She’s like, ‘Celeste, she’s not coping in the second one, what is she doing? I could kind of see the point of view of Mary Louise.’”

‘Superman & Lois’ has garnered praise as one of CW’s top superhero shows. Despite CW’s restructuring and cancelation of many projects, ‘Superman & Lois’ secured its season 4 renewal shortly before the season 3 finale. Although loosely connected to the Arrowverse, the show has distinguished itself from other CW superhero series, which have faced criticism in recent years.
Season 4 has been confirmed as the show’s final season, with reduced episodes, a smaller main cast, and a smaller writing team due to budget constraints. Despite these changes, an iconic character, Jimmy Olsen, is set to appear, with Douglas Smith cast in the role according to TVLine.
In the show, Jimmy is depicted as an outgoing young adult who is known for being the life of the party at work. Despite working closely with Clark, he struggles to break through Clark’s reserved demeanor. Unaware of Clark’s secret identity as Superman, Jimmy is determined to befriend him.
