Spider-Man: Homecoming becomes the highest-grossing superhero movie of the year

Earlier this month, Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming became the highest-grossing reboot of all time, thanks in no small part to its solid opening in China, and now the film has overtaken Wonder Woman and Guardians of the Galaxy to become the biggest superhero movie of the year so far.

By close of play this weekend, Homecoming has grossed $874.4 million, compared to $863.4 million for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, $819.6 million for Wonder Woman, and $616.8 million for Logan. It is also the fourth-biggest release of the year behind Beauty and the Beast ($1.263 billion), The Fate of the Furious ($1.239 billion) and Despicable Me 3 (1.019 billion).

In terms of the Spider-Man franchise, Homecoming still trails the franchise leader Spider-Man 3, which grossed $890.9 million back in 2017.

Spider-Man: Homecoming overtakes Wonder Woman at the global box office

Spurred on by an impressive $70.8 million opening weekend in China – the third-biggest for a superhero movie – Spider-Man: Homecoming has pushed its global haul to $822.8 million today, surpassing fellow superhero blockbuster Wonder Woman, which has earned $816.3 million to date.

Homecoming has now passed the $821 million grossed by Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man back in 2002, making it the wall-crawler’s second-highest grossing solo movie behind Spider-Man 3 on $890.9 million – a figure that it may well reach depending on its legs in China. It is also the sixth-biggest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe behind this year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Spider-Man: Homecoming becomes highest-grossing reboot of all time

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming finally made its way to the Middle Kingdom this weekend, with the Sony and Marvel produced reboot enjoying a solid $22.2 million opening day, with a further $1.5 million in Friday previews. The wall-crawler’s solo McU debut has now amassed a worldwide haul of $770 million, making it the highest-grossing reboot of all time – a record previously held by 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man on $757 million.

According to projections from Forbes, Homecoming will likely pass $800 million globally this weekend thanks to its debut in China, and could potentially reach as high as $880 million – which would put it ahead of Wonder Woman ($814 million) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($863 million) to make it the biggest superhero movie of the year so far. However, to become the highest-grossing entry in the Spider-Man franchise it would need to shift a few more tickets however, with 2007’s Spider-Man 3 sitting on $891 million.

6 Fascinating Facts About Hunter McGrady, the Woman Breaking Barriers in the Modeling World

  • Popsugar
Hunter McGrady is making a splash in the modeling world after being named Sports Illustrated's "curviest" model in this year's swimsuit issue. Not only is that a huge feat in itself, but at just 24 years old, Hunter has signed with Wilhelmina Models and booked campaigns with Lane Bryant, Forever 21, Torrid, and even Melissa McCarthy's clothing line, Seven7. To top it all off, Hunter is working hard to inspire women to embrace their bodies and love themselves for who they are. "I would love to just continue the message of body positivity and loving yourself and loving your body and knowing that you're worthy of everything," she told Teen Vogue in April. "Everything is available to you, and I just want people to hopefully feel confident, feel empowered that they can go out and everything is available to them." Hunter is certainly one to watch. Spider-Man: Homecoming and Despicable Me 3 share Japan box office

Spider-Man: Homecoming has failed to come out on top during its opening weekend in Japan.

Japan might not have the market power of China in the box office world, but it’s still an important location for Hollywood’s biggest films to do well in.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is the latest blockbuster to open in the market but it has ended up splitting the top spot with Despicable Me 3.

Homecoming may have debuted number one by box office takings, bringing in $4.1 million to Despicable Me 3‘s $3.7 million, but Japan ranks its box office by admissions, not money earned.

Debuting last weekend, Homecoming had 290,000 admissions which is below Despicable Me’s 328,000. And considering Despicable Me 3 is in its fourth weekend, this isn’t the result Spider-Man would have hoped for.

This was, however, 7% better than The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which finished its Japanese run with $28.7 million (not accounting for

The Spider-Man: Homecoming poster happened completely by accident

One of the best posters to come out for Spider-Man: Homecoming was the laziest one: A sleeping Spider-Man, clad in school jacket, with headphones on. The poster encapsulates everything that makes this Spider-Man different from the previous incarnations. It was perfect.

What you may not have known is that the poster is all just the result of a very tired Tom Holland. An Instagram user going by the name of therealspideyman posted an interview clip where Tom Holland reveals the true origin of the poster.

“Interesting story about that poster is that is actually me asleep,” said Holland. “That’s not part of the movie, that’s me in-between takes asleep. We were shooting this scene and I was just really tired that day, and I was just asleep on the floor, and the photographer took a picture. So when they made that the poster, I was like ‘What! What the hell,

Donald Glover “not ruling out” a future with the Marvel Cinematic Universe

If you were around any group of people talking comic book movies back between 2010-2014, then you probably heard at least one person passionately arguing that Donald Glover (Atlanta, Community) should play Miles Morales (another Spider-Man in the Marvel Universe) in a live-action Spider-Man film. This all began when Glover himself was campaigning to play the web-slinger prior to Marc Webb’s reboot The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield. Since then, obviously, the web-slinger has been loaned back over to Marvel, and we have a shiny new Spidey in the form of Tom Holland.

Perhaps as a bit of fan-service, and a nice gesture to Glover himself, Jon Watts included Donald Glover in Spider-Man: Homecoming to play character Aaron Davis: Uncle to Miles Morales himself!

In a recent actor profile by the Hollywood Reporter, Donald Glover shed some light on how he got involved with Spider-Man: Homecoming, and also

Robert Downey Jr. explains why Tom Holland is a perfect Spider-Man

Robert Downey Jr. and Spider-Man actor Tom Holland seem to share a lot of chemistry in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming. Not surprisingly, it looks like that comradery translates off-screen as well. In a recent interview with News Corp Australia Network, the Iron Man actor gushed over co-star Tom Holland and his portrayal of Spider-Man:

“Tom is the perfect man for the job. He’s enthusiastic, bright and gifted, a very physically talented guy by virtue of his dance and acrobatic background. He has just the right combination of elements required to bring a new take on the character.”

It’s a rare thing to find an actor who can inhabit a role so completely. Looking at trailers, and watching interviews with the actor, it really seems easy for Tom Holland to jump into this role. This more than likely left lots of time for Holland to make the role, and by extension the film,
