Hey, History Channel! Audiences are changing and so should you.

When film and television tackle the intricacies of historical events it's always a tricky and difficult task. Filmmakers will never be able to please all the masses because history is and has always been a matter of cultural, social, political and national perspective. That's what makes history so fascinating and so wonder to use in the medium of film and television. To tell and story that will entice and inspire people to learn about the history and the time periods that seem alien to modern day life.

That being said, not only does this show not do the history justice but by extension it fails to give the historical events any context that may allow viewers a chance to truly connect with the circumstances and dilemmas people faced at the time . The "Sons of Liberty" are cardboard cut outs at best and whose dialogue are stilted and constantly garbled in "British bad. British mean. British evil".

If you want to accurately portray history and entice an audience with a wonderful story, perhaps it would be best, History Channel, if you were to leave behind the 'good vs. evil' cliché and go with some nuanced characters and a nuanced storyline. Treat your audiences with more respect than that. If you want to write a complete inaccurate account about Sam Adams as a Batman-like, super hero off to bring about the American Revolution single-handedly. Fine. But if you are going to take such liberties at least breathe some life into the story and the time the Founding Fathers lived in.

Audiences don't need to see villain stereotypes strutting maniacally across the screen or heroes brooding, walking angrily down the streets in slow motion. Newsflash: none of that is compelling! We want to see real people, with real virtues and real flaws. That's history.

And for parents who are looking to educate their kids with this show...you are better off sticking with "Liberty's Kids". At least they make an effort to write some nuance into the show.
