Storyline

Police constable Jones is murdered and a witness hears the killer say Merlin, leading Sidney and Geordie to the Merlin factory, where Geordie is also shot though Sidney believes the gunman mistook him for his real intended victim. Helped by Mrs Maguire and Leonard Sidney discovers that the actual and intended victims served in the same unit in the war and, whilst their commanding officer, Heath, is unhelpful, his nervous wife gives Sidney the names of other ex-soldiers. One of them, Robert Miller, tells Sidney about Spreenhagen, the site where Heath's men murdered unarmed German prisoners of war. The killer is clearly out to avenge them and, defying the inept and bullying inspector Benson, Sidney cracks the case, visiting the recovering Geordie to tell him the result. Soooo slowww and boorrring and nothing like the books which are good
23 February 2015 | by FranklieSee all my reviews

This episode was the worst of the season.

We really really wish they'd stuck with the intelligence and pace and story lines of the books. The film version stories are so slow and flat and that we can't wait for them to be over and we won't be watching them again. They don't flow all that well either.

The actors are great, but the characters aren't as smart and decent as they should be (except for Hildegard) and they're full of clichés, for example the "You're not a cop" speech given by police which we've heard way too many times. And having Sydney be so needy is not a way to endear us or his ladies to him either. "I need you" is a clear sign to run. ") Hopefully they revamp things a bit for next season. The UK is capable of producing such great films. Some we watch again and again because we become so attached to the characters and the places. Grantchester has the potential to be that great. It just needs some tidying up. Being more true to James Runcie's stories would be the best first step.
