‘Venom’ Throttles $700M WW, Propels Sony To $2B+ Overseas Box Office In Best Time Since 2012
Exclusive: On the back of a record-setting opening weekend in China, Sony’s Venom is bonding with a handful of new milestones. With today’s grosses, the Tom Hardy-starrer crosses $700M worldwide, and will hit $500M overseas tomorrow. What’s more, the film is propelling Sony past $2B at the international box office for 2018. That benchmark, one that has not been achieved so early in the year by the Culver City studio since October 31, 2012, was topped through Monday with a total $2.001B.

Based on the Marvel property, the Ruben Fleischer-helmed Venom has been a superhero for Sony since it began its run last month, breaking domestic and global October opening records in its early play. Game of Thrones alumnus Pedro Pascal is set to headline Disney’s streaming Star Wars spinoff series, The Mandalorian.

The Mandalorian has selected its titular Mandalorian in Pedro Pascal!

The small-screen Star Wars Universe has landed its first original headlining TV star in Pascal, who, as Variety reports, is in the midst of negotiations after having been offered the lead role in The Mandalorian, a show touted for the upcoming streaming service, Disney+. The series – which will be shepherded by a high-profile writer/producer/showrunner in Jon Favreau – will prospectively see Pascal play an unnamed main character, previously described by Favreau as “a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy.”

‘Star Wars’: Pedro Pascal to Lead ‘The Mandalorian’ Series
Pedro Pascal has been tapped to star in the “Star Wars” TV series “The Mandalorian,” which is expected to premiere on the Disney streaming service, Disney+.

Pascal’s name had previously been rumored for the role, but sources say he was one of many actors being considered. Now, insiders tell Variety that he has been offered the role and negotiations are underway.

Jon Favreau penned the series, which is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. It follows the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

Disney recently announced that Dave Filoni, who has worked on “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels,” will direct the first episode of the series. “Thor: Ragnarok” director Taika Waititi, Bryce Dallas Howard, “Dope’s” Rick Famuyiwa, and Deborah Chow (“Jessica Jones”) will direct additional episodes.

The Motion Picture Sound Editors said today that Antoine Fuqua will receive its career honor, the Filmmaker Award, for his outstanding contributions to the art of cinema. The veteran director will pick up his hardware during the 66th Mpse Golden Reel Awards on February 17 in Los Angeles.

The Hollywood Music in Media Awards, recognizing music in film, TV, video games, commercials, and trailers, today announced nominees for its 2018 edition. Among the nominates films are Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut “A Star Is Born,” “Black Panther,” “BlacKkKlansman,” “Quincy,” and more.

The ceremony will feature presentations, performances, and a special achievement award. Past honorees include Diane Warren, Smokey Robinson, and Glen Campbell.

Hmma nominations are selected by an advisory board and selection committee which includes journalists, music executives, music-media industry professionals comprised of select members of the Society of Composers and Lyricists, The Television Academy, the AMPAS Music Branch, Naras, and performing rights organizations.

The awards will be held at the Avalon Hollywood on Wednesday, Nov. 14. A portion of proceeds benefit Education Through Music – Los Angeles.

‘The Equalizer 2’ 4K, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Release Dates and Details

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced release dates for director Antoine Fuqua's sequel The Equalizer 2 starring Denzel Washington as justice server Robert McCall.

The Equalizer 2 Digital release is slated for November 13th or a little less than a month from now. However, the wait for The Equalizer 2 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD versions is significantly longer with all three arriving December 11th.

Sony has followed up "Vengeance Mode" from the original The Equalizer home video release with "Retribution Mode" for The Equalizer 2. This mode allows viewers to hear and see insight from Fuqua and Washington during the film.

Note that "Retribution Mode" is on the Blu-ray only, which is inclusive with the 4K Uhd combo pack.

Sony Swings Past $1 Billion As ‘Venom’ Bites $35M+; ‘First Man’ Has Soft Launch With $16M+ – Sunday Am

In today’s film news roundup, a quartet of Ufc fighters have joined Stephen Dorff’s “Embattled,” firefighting documentary “Wildland” is bought, and Timothée Chalamet and Rachel Weisz are honored.

Ufc fighters Tyron Woodley, Cowboy Cerrone, Eryk Anders, and former Ufc fighter Kenny Florian have joined Stephen Dorff and Darren Mann in director Nick Sarkisov’s Mma drama “Embattled.”

Written by David McKenna, the film will be produced by Sergey Sarkisov for Blitz Films, alongside Kate Cohen for Straight Up Films, and Scott Lastaiti, with Blitz’s Nick Sarkisov and Dorff serving as executive producers. Eryl Cochran from Blitz Films will oversee production. The film is currently shooting in Alabama.

It's not clear who out there was asking for a movie about the Spider-Man villain Kraven, but the fact of the matter is that we are getting one. This will be part of Sony's initiative to expand a separate set of films in an alternate Spider-Verse, separate to the films in the McU. The screenplay for the film is currently being fleshed out by writer Richard Wenk (The Equalizer 2), who has big plans for the story. Although Kraven the Hunter will focus mainly on the titular Spidey foe, Richard Wenk has revealed in an interview about the film that Spider-Man himself is going to appear, teasing a battle between the two characters.

"It is in the Spider-Man universe. It's going to adhere very closely to the lore of Kraven the Hunter. And he is going to come face to face with Spider-Man."

The annual “For the People, By the People” awards show opened nomination voting today and announced an additional 13 categories to add to their robust ballot list of categories that include the best in movies, television, music, and pop culture.
