A small town in upstate Pennsylvania is overcome by a massive underground mine fire which began in May of 1962. After many failed attempts by the government to put out the fire, it grew larger and moved beneath most of the town. By 1980, hundreds of residents had to be relocated and eminent domain was eventually enforced, forcing the remaining residents out of their homes. A group of residents filed a lawsuit and fought the state of Pennsylvania for the right to stay in their homes. By 2013, the case was settled and granted those remaining residents life estates. Did You Know?

The documentary had many technical and financial issues from producing, filming, and editing, which at one point director / producer Joe Sapienza was going to cut his losses and shelve the entire project three times: March of 2014, killing the short forever, and in June 2015, and June 2016, killing the feature forever, even though the entire project was in post-production in it's rough cut stage by this point. He changed his mind after a close friend and author Dave DeKok talked him into continuing the project. See more »
