Storyline

In crime ridden Gotham City, Thomas and Martha Wayne are murdered before young Bruce Wayne's eyes. Although Gotham City Police Department detectives, James Gordon, and his cynical partner, Harvey Bullock, seem to solace's the case quickly, things are not so simple. Inspired by Bruce's traumatized desire for justice, Gordon vows to find it amid Gotham's corruption. Thus begins Gordon's lonely quest that would set him against his own comrades and the underworld with their own deadly rivalries and mysteries. In the coming wars, innocence will be lost and compromises will be made as some criminals will fall as casualties while others will rise as super villains. All the while, young Bruce observes this war with a growing obsession that would one day drive him to seek his own justice against the evil of Gotham as The Batman. Trivia

Early in the first season, the industry website deadline.com reported that there had been a hair and makeup test performed on the set in advance of shooting in which a white stuntwoman was made up in blackface (a process known as "painting down") to prepare her to double for a black guest actress. Painting down stuntpeople is against SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) rules; a SAG representative said that the situation was "presumptively improper... in other words: the practice of 'painting down' is unacceptable anywhere and particularly so in a production center like New York City with so many qualified stuntwomen of color trained for this type of work." When Deadline called this issue to Warner Brothers' attention, WB at first tried to minimize its importance but later released this statement: "A mistake was made this week in casting a stunt woman for a guest star in a particular scene on the show. The situation has been rectified, and we regret the error." See more »

Origins Told Right
23 January 2018 | by highmarksreviewsSee all my reviews

Gotham has long been the TV show many like to pick at, its first season, while compelling was mostly a mundane origin tale. Happy to report that since that time, the show has evolved into something really special. Lavish, atmospheric set pieces, great performances and a constant drift from episodic story arcs are just a few qualities to love about this show. Moreover it does justice to many comic book characters that everyone knows. While it does face some tonal inconsistency and gets the villain-of-the-week treatment on occasion, at least it builds its characters and does proper justice to them.
