Storyline

From PBS - In recent years, an unusual spate of deadly shark attacks has gripped Australia, resulting in five deaths in 10 months. At the same time, great white sharks have begun appearing in growing numbers off the beaches of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, not far from the waters where Steven Spielberg filmed Jaws. What's behind the mysterious arrival of this apex predator in an area where it's rarely been seen for hundreds of years? Are deadly encounters with tourists inevitable? To separate fact from fear, NOVA teams with leading shark experts in Australia and the United States to uncover the science behind the great white's hunting instincts. With shark populations plummeting, scientists race to unlock the secrets of these powerful creatures of the deep in their quest to save people -- and sharks. Written by Anonymous

Totally irresponsible yet disguised as scientific and educational.

I thoroughly hated "Why Sharks Attack" and felt that the show was as unscientific and alarmist as it could be. In other words, instead of educating us, the program tries to terrify people with unwarranted fears. The bottom line is that sharks attack because they are hungry and very, very, very rarely do they ever attack people. Let me put this in perspective. In the US, for example, you are about 50 times more likely to die from bees, 30 times more likely to be killed by dogs and 20 times more likely to be killed by horses!! In fact, many of the awful killers we hear about on TV are complete exaggerations and are only meant to scare us and get us to watch these shows. Bears, alligators, sharks, bears, mountain lions and wolves, on average, kill only about 3 people a year in the US...ALL TOGETHER!! So, instead of talking about the dreaded shark (which leads, sadly, to macho idiots killing the creatures to prove their supposed manliness), perhaps the show should have been about the dreaded horse!!

The problem with "Why Sharks Attack" is not just because it's alarmist and irresponsible. But with lots of experts and a scientific look to the show, it seems to be realistic and educational when, at times, it's total nonsense.
