Storyline

The vikings are recovering from their wounds after the failed attack on Paris. Ragnar in particular is suffering badly from his wounds. In his dreams, he sees his old friend Athelstan. Led by Rollo, Lagertha and Bjorn the vikings stage a second attack on the city. This time they focus on gaining access over the bridge but are again repelled. The citizens of Parisians are suffering however. The plague has set in and there is a food shortage. Emperor Charles decides to meet with Ragnar to learn what he wants but is surprised at the viking leader's request. In Kattegat meanwhile, Aslaug has to decide what to do with a wandering Christian missionary. Written by garykmcd

Trivia

The missionary called Ansgar is a real historic person. In fact his is in danish history described as the person who brought christianity to Denmark. He lived almost at the same time as Charlemagne. He is here seen carrying "jernbyrd" (danish for ordeal), but it was in fact not him who did it, but a bishop later in history during king Harald Bluetooth, named Poppo, who did that to prove his christian faith to the danish king (who was not yet christian, but became that later). Goofs

The Viking women under Lagertha attacking the bridge by swimming under cover of darkness and then producing bows to kill the defenders makes great TV but is complete nonsense. Throughout Dark Ages and medieval history, the bow was notorious as being a poor weapon when wet, even by light rain. The gut, sinew and wood used in their construction were prone to damp, while the glue which held it all together would quickly disintegrate in the presence of water. The historical records are full of stories where this sort of problem changed the course of battles. Even in light rain, archers would unstring their bows and wrap them in oiled leather to keep them dry, and archers would often be all but useless on the battlefield in adverse weather. See more »

The Request
7 October 2017 | by claudio_carvalhoSee all my reviews

After losing a thousand men, the wounded Ragnar orders another attack to Paris. Rollo, Lagherta and Kalf command the raid and cross the gate of Paris. However they are defeated again and need to retreat. While healing, the Northmen keep Paris under siege and there is a disease killing the inhabitants in Paris. Emperor Charles proposes a deal to the Pagans offering gold and silver to return to their home. Ragnar, who is seriously wounded, accepts a meeting outside the walls with the Franks and sneaks out to meet them alone. He tells that he is dying and surprises the Christians with an unexpected request.

"Breaking Point" is another full of action episode with another spectacular raid to Paris and surprising actions. The request of Ragnar to the Christians is absolutely unexpected and the Auslag's strong decision is also surprising. My vote is nine.
