Few teams in professional sports history elicit such a wide range of emotions as the Detroit Pistons of the late 1980s and early '90s. For some, the team was heroic - made up of gritty, hard-nosed players who didn't back down from anyone. And for others, it was exactly that trait - the willingness to do seemingly anything to win - that made them the "Bad Boys," the team fans loved to hate. No drama is complete without compelling characters, and the Bad Boys Pistons had a full cast. Viewers will see the many factors that drove one of the best - and most complex - players in NBA history: Isiah Thomas, a lethal combination of sweetness on the outside and toughness within. In addition, the team was characterized by the toughness of Bill Laimbeer and Rick Mahorn; the quiet intensity of Joe Dumars; the savvy and fearlessness of a young Dennis Rodman; the comic relief provided by John Salley; and the mixture of grit, professionalism and style possessed by coach Chuck Daly. Punk basketball.
24 December 2014 | by MartinHaferSee all my reviews

The Detroit Pistons of the 1980s and early 90s were an easy team to love or to hate. On one hand, they were extremely successful and won two NBA championships--championships when the league was being dominated by powerhouse teams like the Celtics, Lakers and, later, the Bulls. So you have to admire their talent--they sure had it. However, on the other hand, the team seemed to deliberately perpetuate the bad-boy image--with cheap shots, intense game play and on/off the court antics that set them apart from the other successful teams of the era.

What you think of this film will strongly depend on what you think of the Pistons and what you think of what I would call 'punk basketball'. If you like a game that is very physical and occasionally dirty, the film will be one you most likely enjoy. As for me, I just felt it was all kind of sad and couldn't feel that excited about their success or this film. However, the film was well constructed and is a worth addition to the "30 for 30" series.
