The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Mortara recounts the story of a young Jewish boy in Bologna, Italy in 1858 who, having been secretly baptized, is forcibly taken from his family to be raised as a Christian. His parents' struggle to free their son becomes part of a larger political battle that pits the Papacy against forces of democracy and Italian unification.

Oscar Isaac was attached to star in the film for some time while the film was in development but the project's progression slowed as it was on an international search to find its lead role for the child of Edgardo Mortara. The project then took a backseat when Steven Spielberg unexpectedly signed on to direct The Post (2017) which was getting fast tracked to get into production which led to Isaac dropping out of the film project once Spielberg signed on to do The Post (2017) which put the status of the film project on hold while they continue to their search for the lead role.
