An okay Period Piece
15 September 2018 | by mto10See all my reviews

Last summer I had to watch an episode of this show for an Anthropology class and was looking forward to it since I heard good things about the series. After watching the first episode, I was intrigued, but slightly disappointed. Nevertheless, I binged through the series and didn't end up liking it much. Despite it not being my cup of tea, I can see the effort that was put into it.

Overall, I feel the show is just ok. Nothing too good, but not bad overall either. The story was very slow, crawling at a slower pace than Better Call Saul, which is hard to believe considering BCS is one of the slower paced shows out there. This is not always a negative, but for a show like Taboo, I think it is. Can't neglect the acting though, because it was good all around. The highlight of the show, and standout actor being Tom Hardy. To me, he carried Taboo on his shoulders. The setting of the show is dark and gritty, which is interesting to an extent. Especially for a period piece, but it gets old quickly. This leads into another negative for me which is the seemingly boring and bland aspect of the show at times. The dark and gritty part factors into this.

This isn't a show I'd necessarily recommend unless you're very interested in history and period pieces in general. For me, this isn't what I'd consider entertainment, as there's nothing thematic or interesting about it, nor it's characters. I understand others will like it though, and that's up to them. To me, the show was a drag to get through. But there are definitely worse shows out there.

My Rating: 6.0/10
