- It's Selma's sixth birthday. She, like most girls her age, wants to portray the princess on this her special day, despite the juxtaposition of her everyday life of fighting outside her apartment building, which she takes as the norm. Her father, who is fighting at the front, doesn't have the means to send her a birthday cake as he wants, so instead sends her what he can in a cake's place: a live chicken. Selma's mother Sabina and Selma's older sister Azra's plans are to kill the chicken to cook it for Selma's birthday dinner as was Selma's father's intention in sending her the gift. Selma, however, wants to save the chicken if she can't keep it as a pet. Her measures to do so have potentially tragic consequences due to their everyday situation.—Huggo
