A brash young Jewish filmmaker from New York tries to help an overly-zealous Baptist preacher in south Alabama make a movie about the Prodigal Son. In the process they both learn about the love and acceptance of the Prodigal's father.

Originally promoted as a faith-based picture under the title Shooting the Prodigal (2016), the film was retitled and re-released as By the Grace of Bob (2017). Writer/director David E. Powers claimed that viewers initially rejected the film due the inclusion of people of color, Muslim and gay characters in prominent roles, prompting the filmmakers to re-market it to secular audiences.
