Trivia

The Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) is the premier intelligence agency of Pakistan. The agency gained global recognition and fame in the 1980s, when it supported the Afghan mujahideen against the Soviet Union during the Soviet-Afghan War in the erstwhile Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. During the war, the ISI worked in close coordination with the United States' Central Intelligence Agency and the United Kingdom's Secret Intelligence Service to run Operation Cyclone-a program to train and fund the mujahideen with support from China, Israel, Saudi Arabia and other Muslim nations. Another very strong episode with interesting character moments
2 February 2021 | by snoozejoncSee all my reviews

The Jennings' are tasked with extracting information from a Pakistani Intelligence agent.

It's difficult to say I enjoyed the episode like most of The Americans due to its largely downbeat content, but I thought it was very well made as always. Character development is for me the strongest point.

Several of the characters have interesting scenes showing how the job is starting to affect them, particularly Phillip with a decision he makes about a mission and Elizabeth doing the part of the mission Phillip would probably have done in the past.

The most interesting part for me was the family dynamics and the conflict with Paige, who is absolutely correct to feel aggrieved by her mother's controlling, hypocritical attitude. The culture and ideological clashes between the soviet and western liberal ways of life are explored well during this. There is a nice scene with Nina and Oleg thrown in which puts a Russian spin on the type of idea Paige is contemplating.

The overarching series narrative goes through a number of scenes that set things up for what looks like it will be a thrilling and suspenseful finish to series two.

As always the production is strong and the performances from all cast are excellent.

For me it was an 8.5/10 but I round upwards.
