Storyline

When a body is found trussed up in the River Odra in western Poland, the police are baffled. The man has been starved and tortured, before being thrown alive into the river. It has all the hallmarks of a punishment beating. The murder investigation stalls until police discover an online murder story written by a Krystian Bala that bears similarities to the death of the man in the river. Bala has even published a book, an explicit cocktail of murder and pornography. Bala becomes the prime suspect, and police reveal a catalogue of errors by Bala that result in his arrest and conviction. To this day Bala protests his innocence. Written by Sky Vision [gb]

Bala: The Novel Killer
12 September 2017 | by See all my reviews

Rule 1: don't commit a murder, any murder. Rule 2: if you can't resist the temptation, dispose of the body where it is unlikely to be found. Rule 3: don't write a novel about the crime detailing how it was carried out.

Kristian Bala murdered his wife's lover, apparently torturing him over a three day period, then dumped his body in the river at a remote spot. He might have gotten away with it had it not been found reasonably promptly, and had he not left a string of clues in his wake. We hear quite a bit here from the pychobabblers about his warped personality, but there is no suggestion that he might have subconsciously wanted to get caught.

We hear too from the lead detective on the case, and from Bala himself, who speaks excellent English. He'll have time to learn a couple more languages before he is released. Bala was given a 25 year sentence. Not mentioned here is the fact that he appealed his conviction successfully. Fortunately, the December 2008 retrial led to the same result.
